Oscar Castillo

Oscar Castillo is a computer science professor at the Tijuana Institute of Technology, and his work builds intelligent systems from type-2 fuzzy logic and soft computing. In 2008 he and Patricia Melin published Type-2 Fuzzy Logic: Theory and Applications with Springer. He was vice-president of HAFSA and president of IFSA in 2013, and he became an IFSA Fellow in 2015 and a MICAI Fellow in 2016. Clarivate Analytics and Web of Science recognized him as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2017 and 2018. As of October 2026, he is president of HAFSA and past president of IFSA.

    A book on type-2 fuzzy logic

    Castillo and Melin publish Type-2 Fuzzy Logic: Theory and Applications with Springer in 2008. The book describes new methods for building intelligent systems using type-2 fuzzy logic and soft computing.

    Vice-president of HAFSA

    In 2013 he is vice-president of HAFSA and president of IFSA. His degree is a Doctor Habilitatus in computer science from the Polish Academy of Sciences.

    A keynote on type-2 controllers

    At the 2013 national seminar he gives a talk on type-2 fuzzy controllers for complex control problems, including mobile robotics and aircraft dynamic systems.

    A lecture in Bulgaria

    In June 2015 he gives an invited lecture in Bulgaria on fuzzy dynamic parameter adaptation in the cuckoo search algorithm.

    IFSA and MICAI fellowships

    He becomes an IFSA Fellow in 2015 and a MICAI Fellow in 2016.
