Timeline

1. 2008–2010

   Kernelized Sorting and label proportions

   In 2008, he coauthors Kernelized Sorting with Le Song and Alex J. Smola, accepted as a NIPS spotlight paper; IEEE TPAMI publishes it in 2010 with Tinne Tuytelaars as an added coauthor. Estimating Labels from Label Proportions, written with Smola, Tiberio S. Caetano and Quoc V. Le, appears in the Journal of Machine Learning Research in 2009.

2. By 2012

   PhD at the Australian National University

   Born in Indonesia, he moves to Singapore for his first degree and starts his machine learning research in Australia. He receives his PhD in Computer Science from the Australian National University in 2012.

3. 2014–2015

   From Cambridge to Sussex

   Before Sussex, he is a Newton International Fellow of the Royal Society and the British Academy in the Machine Learning Group of the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. In 2014, he teaches the Machine Learning module 934G5 at Sussex's Department of Informatics, and in 2015 IEEE TPAMI publishes his A Very Simple Safe-Bayesian Random Forest with Zoubin Ghahramani.

4. 2017

   The Predictive Analytics Lab

   In 2017, the Predictive Analytics Lab (PAL) is founded as part of the Department of Informatics at the University of Sussex. It is his research team, and it undertakes machine learning and computer vision research.

5. 2019–2020

   An ERC grant for BayesianGDPR

   In May 2019, he becomes a Reader in Machine Learning at the University of Sussex, and in 2019 he is awarded an ERC Starting Grant for BayesianGDPR, a project on Bayesian models and algorithms for fairness and transparency. Work on the project begins in April 2020.

6. March 2021

   A lab for trustworthy machine learning

   In March 2021, BCAM opens a Severo Ochoa Strategic Lab on Trustworthy Machine Learning in Bilbao. He leads it, and BCAM's scientific director Jose A. Lozano co-leads it.

7. 2022–2023

   Monash Indonesia and Act.AI

   In July 2022, he takes an adjunct position at Monash University in Indonesia. In December 2023, the Predictive Analytics Lab wins an ERC Proof of Concept grant for Act.AI, a project on bias auditing and mitigation tools for checking AI conformity with the EU AI Act through statistical matching.

8. As of October 2026

   Professor at Sussex

   He is Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Sussex, leads the BCAM Severo Ochoa Strategic Lab on Trustworthy Machine Learning, and is an Adjunct Professor (Data Science) at Monash University Indonesia. He is also an ELLIS Scholar in Human-centric Machine Learning. He is one of 10 guarantor researchers for BCAM's Severo Ochoa accreditation, covering January 2023 to December 2026 and focused on trustworthy machine learning.
