Morgan Klaus Scheuerman

Morgan Klaus Scheuerman is a human-computer interaction researcher who studies how gender and race are built into facial analysis systems and image databases. A 2019 CSCW paper that found facial analysis services markedly worse at determining gender for trans people won a Best Paper award, as did a 2020 paper on race and gender in image databases. A 2021 Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship supported their Information Science PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder, which they completed in 2023 before a postdoctoral position there. In 2024, a CHI paper on how tech workers shape identity concepts in computer vision won another Best Paper award, and in 2025 they were among the Sony AI authors of the Nature paper that introduced the FHIBE fairness benchmark. They are a research scientist on the AI Ethics team at Sony AI in Barcelona and a visiting scholar at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    Degrees from Goucher and UMBC

In 2016, they graduate from Goucher College with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies, and they go on to earn a Master of Science in Human-Centered Computing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

  2. 2019

    How Computers See Gender

In April 2019, they are one of 26 signatories of an open letter that calls on Amazon to stop selling its facial recognition technology to law enforcement. Their paper How Computers See Gender, written with Jacob M. Paul and Jed R. Brubaker, runs 2,450 Instagram photos labeled with gender hashtags through services from Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Clarifai, and finds the systems markedly worse at determining gender for trans people. The paper wins a Best Paper award at CSCW in 2019.

  3. 2020

Race and gender in image databases

In 2020, How We've Taught Algorithms to See Identity, written with Kandrea Wade, Caitlin Lustig and Jed R. Brubaker, wins a CSCW Best Paper award and a recognition for contributions to diversity and inclusion. The paper looks at how race and gender are constructed in the image databases behind facial analysis.

  4. 2021

    Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship

In 2021, they receive a Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship, which funds two paid years to finish a PhD in Information Science at CU Boulder and includes a chance to collaborate with Microsoft researchers. Jed Brubaker, who recruited them to the Identity Lab, advises them there.

  5. May 2023

PhD defense and a CU postdoc

They defend their dissertation and graduate with a PhD in Information Science from CU Boulder in May 2023. A postdoctoral position in Information Science at CU Boulder follows, researching identity representations in technical infrastructures.

  6. 2024

    A CHI 2024 Best Paper

In 2024, Products of Positionality: How Tech Workers Shape Identity Concepts in Computer Vision, written with Jed R. Brubaker for the CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, wins a Best Paper award. The paper began as a chapter of their dissertation research.

  7. 2025

    The FHIBE benchmark in Nature

In 2025, they are among the authors of the Nature paper Fair human-centric image dataset for ethical AI benchmarking. The paper introduces the Fair Human-Centric Image Benchmark (FHIBE), which Sony AI built around consent, compensation, diversity and transparency. In December 2025, the work of Sony AI's AI Ethics team gets both the December cover and an editorial feature in Nature magazine.

  8. As of October 2026

AI Ethics research at Sony AI

They are a research scientist on the AI Ethics team at Sony AI, based in Barcelona, Spain, and a visiting scholar at the University of Colorado Boulder. Their work centers on the intersection between human-computer interaction and responsible and ethical AI.
