Gerhard Fischer
Gerhard Fischer is a computer scientist whose work links artificial intelligence with human-computer interaction and lifelong learning. He earned a mathematics degree in Heidelberg and a computer science PhD in Hamburg, then held positions at MIT, Stuttgart, and Colorado. He published a 1987 IJCAI paper titled “A Critic for Lisp,” and his research at the Center for LifeLong Learning & Design spans collaboration and design. SIGCHI elected him to its Academy, ACM named him a Fellow, and he received ACM SIGDOC’s RIGO Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg. He received the EUSSET-IISI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, published work on hybrid human-AI environments in 2026, and is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder.
