Mohamed Cheriet

Mohamed Cheriet is a professor at ÉTS Montréal who applies AI to handwriting recognition, ancient manuscripts and the energy use of cloud and 5G networks. He earned a B.Eng. in Algiers in 1984 and a computer science Ph.D. at Paris VI in 1988, then joined ÉTS in 1992. Wiley published his textbook Character Recognition Systems in 2007, and he held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Smart Sustainable Eco-Cloud from 2013 to 2020. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2016, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada and Engineers Canada followed in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Today, he is a professor in ÉTS's Department of Systems Engineering, where his team develops AI-based energy optimization for 5G networks with Ericsson.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1988

    Degrees in Algiers and Paris

He earns a B.Eng. at USTHB University in Algiers in 1984. He then completes an M.Sc. in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1988, both in computer science, at the University of Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI).

  2. 1992

    Professor at ÉTS

He joins the École de technologie supérieure (University of Quebec) in Montreal in 1992, as a professor in its Automation Engineering Department.

  3. 1998–2006

    Founding Synchromedia and LIVIA

He founds the Synchromedia Consortium and Laboratory for multimedia communication in telepresence at ÉTS and becomes its director in 1998. He also co-founds the Laboratory for Imagery, Vision and Artificial Intelligence (LIVIA) at the University of Quebec and directs it from 2000 to 2006.

  4. October 2007

    A textbook on character recognition

Wiley publishes Character Recognition Systems in October 2007, which he writes with Nawwaf Kharma, Cheng-Lin Liu and Ching Y. Suen. The textbook covers the main processing steps of a document image analysis and recognition system, from pre-processing and feature extraction to word and string recognition.

  5. 2013–2020

    Canada Research Chair in eco-cloud

He holds the NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Smart Sustainable Eco-Cloud from 2013 to 2020. His team's GreenStar Network, built with Kim Khoa Nguyen and funded by CANARIE, federates cloud computing infrastructures and shifts processing tasks between data centers under a "follow the sun, follow the wind" principle to reduce their carbon footprint.

  6. 2016

    IAPR Fellow

The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2016 for contributions to ancient manuscript processing, form construction, handwriting recognition, multidisciplinary application, and service to IAPR. IEEE Canada gives him its J.M. Ham Outstanding Engineering Educator Award in 2016.

  7. 2017–2019

    Three Canadian engineering fellowships

He becomes a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 2017, of the Engineering Institute of Canada in 2018, and of Engineers Canada in 2019.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at ÉTS Montréal

He is a professor in ÉTS's Department of Systems Engineering. With Ericsson, his team develops AI-based solutions that optimize the energy consumption of 5G networks, and he serves on the steering committee of PIVOT 2026, led by the Quebec Innovation Council.
