Michel Verleysen
Michel Verleysen is a professor at UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, whose work in machine learning covers high-dimensional analysis and manifold learning. With co-author John Lee, he wrote the 2007 Springer book Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction, and by 2013 he was a full professor in the Machine Learning Group of the ICTEAM Institute. The IEEE named him a Fellow in 2015 for contributions to high-dimensional analysis and manifold learning. He is the contact for submissions to ESANN, the European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning, a series that has run every year since 1993 and returns to Bruges in 2027. Alongside this work, he is Vice Rector of the Science and Technology Sector at UCLouvain and sits on the CESAER Board of Directors for 2026–2029.
Timeline
-
2007
The Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction book
Springer New York publishes Nonlinear Dimensionality Reduction in 2007, a book he writes with John A. Lee. It describes methods that reduce the dimensionality of numerical databases, a topic also called manifold learning.
-
By 2013
Full professor at UCLouvain
By 2013, he is a full professor and Honorary Research Director of the FNRS at UCLouvain's Louvain School of Engineering. His group is the Machine Learning Group of the ICTEAM Institute.
-
2013–2014
ESANN 2014 in Bruges
In 2013, he sends out the call for papers for ESANN 2014, the 22nd European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning, held in Bruges in April 2014. The conference series has run every year since 1993.
-
2015
Named an IEEE Fellow
In 2015, the IEEE names him a Fellow for contributions to high-dimensional analysis and manifold learning. He works at UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.
-
2025–2026
Announcing ESANN 2026 and 2027
On the ESANN website, where he is the contact for submissions, he announces in 2025 that ESANN 2026 takes place in Bruges. In 2026, he announces ESANN 2027, set for Bruges in April 2027.
-
Since 2026
Vice Rector and CESAER director
As Vice Rector of the Science and Technology Sector at UCLouvain, he is elected a Director of the CESAER Board for a four-year term from 2026 to 2029. CESAER is an association of universities of science and technology across Europe.
