Researcher

Michalina Pacholska

Also known as Michalina Wanda Pacholska

Michalina Pacholska is a research scientist whose work connects signal processing with protein structure prediction and agent-based models. She completed a PhD at EPFL's LCAV in 2021 after earning a mathematics master's degree with a specialization in topology and set theory. Her papers range from continuous localization to the 2021 Nature AlphaFold study, Lippmann colour photography and genetic programming for interpretable agent logic. She posted the first part of The Backup in May 2022 and wrote in 2023 about ways AI can support visual artists. As of October 2026, she is a research scientist at Cosimmetry, where she works on Automated Resilient Cyber Defence projects.

Timeline

  1. 2018–2020

    Range-only continuous localization

With Frederike Duembgen and Adam Scholefield, she holds the 2018 copyright on code for continuous localization from sparse range measurements, with recovery guarantees. In 2020, their paper, ‘Relax and Recover: Guaranteed Range-Only Continuous Localization’, appears in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters.

  2. July 2021

    AlphaFold in Nature

The July 2021 Nature paper on AlphaFold lists her with a DeepMind London affiliation; she contributes as a doctoral student at EPFL's LCAV. The paper presents the first computational method that regularly predicts protein structures with atomic accuracy even where no similar structure is known.

  3. September 2021

Doctoral thesis on geometry and colour

She defends her PhD thesis, ‘Sampling Geometry and Colour’, in computer and communication sciences at EPFL's LCAV in September 2021 and receives her diploma in October 2021. The thesis studies the mathematics of localization and the physics of colour photography. She holds a mathematics master's degree with a specialization in topology and set theory.

  4. May 2022

    The Backup webcomic

In May 2022, she posts the first part of her webcomic The Backup to mark Webcomic Day.

  5. July 2022

    Lippmann photography as signal processing

In July 2022, she coauthors ‘Lippmann Photography: A Signal Processing Perspective’ with Gilles Baechler, Arnaud Latty, Adam Scholefield and Martin Vetterli. The paper derives a mathematical model of Lippmann colour photography and validates it in experiments on the authors' own photographs.

  6. March 2023

    Learning interpretable agent logic

In March 2023, she coauthors the JASSS paper ‘Learning Interpretable Logic for Agent-Based Models from Domain Independent Primitives’ with Rory Greig, Chris Major, Sebastian Bending and Jordi Arranz. The paper uses genetic programming to evolve interpretable agent logic for flocking and opinion-dynamics models.

  7. May 2023

    Automating the wrong thing

In May 2023, she publishes Cosimmetry’s essay “Automating the wrong thing”, which argues that AI tools should support artists with the laborious, repetitive parts of making comics.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research scientist at Cosimmetry

As of October 2026, she is a research scientist at Cosimmetry, where she leads AI/ML strategy and contributes to software development for products that connect data and AI with human decision-making. In January 2023, she joins the company from Improbable and works on its Automated Resilient Cyber Defence projects.
