Bernardino Romera-Paredes

Also known as Bernardino Romera Paredes

Bernardino Romera-Paredes is a machine learning researcher who co-authored AlphaFold and is among the authors of DeepMind's AlphaTensor and FunSearch posts. In 2009 he earned a computer engineering degree in Murcia, and a UCL doctorate followed in 2014. From 2014 to 2016 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Oxford's Torr Vision Group. AlphaFold's Nature paper appeared in July 2021, and the FunSearch paper in Nature lists him among its equal-contribution authors. He helped found Hiverge, a startup launched in September 2025, and is now its chief technology officer.

  1. 2009–2010

    Degrees in Murcia and London

    The Universidad de Murcia awards him a B.Sc. in computer engineering in 2009, and University College London awards him an M.Sc. in computational statistics and machine learning in 2010.

  2. 2014

    A PhD at UCL

    In 2014 he completes a PhD at University College London, supervised by Massimiliano Pontil and Nadia Berthouze.

  3. 2014–2016

    A postdoc in Oxford

    A postdoctoral research fellowship in the Torr Vision Group at the University of Oxford runs from 2014 to 2016.

  4. 2021

    Co-authoring AlphaFold

    The AlphaFold system, which predicts protein structures, lists him as a co-author, and its Nature paper appears in July 2021.

  5. 2022

    Discovering algorithms with AlphaTensor

    DeepMind's October 2022 post on AlphaTensor, a system for discovering novel algorithms, carries him among its authors.

  6. 2023

    FunSearch for mathematical discovery

    The December 2023 FunSearch post from DeepMind names him as a co-author, and it describes new discoveries in mathematical sciences using large language models. Its Nature paper lists him among the equal-contribution authors.

  7. September 2025

    Co-founding Hiverge

    Hiverge, a startup that launches in September 2025 with seed funding, counts him among its founders.

  8. Since 2025

    Chief technology officer at Hiverge

    He serves as chief technology officer of Hiverge, a startup headquartered in Cambridge, and a former Google DeepMind research scientist.
