Andrew W. Senior

Also known as A. Senior, A. W. Senior, A.W. Senior, Andrew Senior

Andrew W. Senior is a machine learning researcher whose career spans speech recognition, computer vision, protein folding and genomics. After a Cambridge PhD and speech-recognition work at LIMSI, he joined IBM Research in 1994, then moved from teaching at Columbia to Google Research in 2008. At DeepMind, he contributed to AlphaFold’s protein-structure work; he became an IEEE Fellow in 2018 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021. As of October 2026, he works at Google DeepMind on AlphaGenome and quantum error correction.

Timeline

  1. 1994

    A Cambridge doctorate

He completed a Cambridge PhD in 1994 with a thesis on offline cursive handwriting recognition using recurrent neural networks. Earlier, he worked on speech recognition at LIMSI at the University of Paris XI.

  2. 1994

    Building systems at IBM

He joined IBM Research in 1994 and worked on handwriting, audio-visual speech, face and fingerprint recognition, video privacy and visual tracking. His research also included computer vision.

  3. 2008

    From Columbia to Google

He taught at Columbia University in 2008, then joined Google Research and worked on speech recognition with deep neural and recurrent neural networks.

  4. 2018

    A fold and a fellowship

He worked as a machine learning researcher at DeepMind and contributed to its early AlphaFold protein-folding project. He became an IEEE Fellow in 2018.

  5. 2020

    Learning protein potentials

With DeepMind colleagues, he published a Nature paper that names AlphaFold and uses a neural network to predict distances between protein residues, then builds a potential to generate structures.

  6. 2021

    Protein structures at scale

He co-authored the AlphaFold paper that showed atomic-accuracy predictions in many cases and contributed to research applying the system at whole-proteome scale. The Royal Academy of Engineering elected him a Fellow in 2021.

  7. As of October 2026

    Genomes and quantum codes

He works at Google DeepMind. In 2026, he co-authored an AlphaGenome study that predicts regulatory genomic tracks and variant effects from DNA, and a study of machine-learning control for quantum error correction.
