Mark Overmars

Mark Overmars is a computer scientist whose probabilistic-roadmap work addressed robot motion planning in high-dimensional configuration spaces. He earned a computer-science PhD at Utrecht University in 1983 under Jan van Leeuwen, became a professor there in 1990, and remained on its faculty until September 2013. Game Maker began in 1999 as his drag-and-drop tool for educators and students. He directed GATE from 2007 until January 2011 and made Super Snake HD with graphic designer Jochem Schut in 2011 after taking two months of unpaid leave. He co-founded Tingly Games, which merged with CoolGames in 2016; as of October 2026, he is a retired computer scientist and amateur nature photographer in the Netherlands.
