Max A. Viergever
Also known as Max Viergever
Max Viergever is a medical-imaging researcher whose work spans pattern recognition, image registration and explainable AI. He earned an MSc in applied mathematics in 1972 and a DSc on cochlear mechanics in 1980, both at Delft University of Technology. In 1988 he became professor and head of Medical Imaging at Utrecht University, and he founded the Image Sciences Institute at UMC Utrecht. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2002, and in 2003 he became editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. He co-authored the elastix toolbox paper in 2010 and a 2022 review of explainable AI in deep-learning medical image analysis, and he is professor emeritus at Utrecht University.

The International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow in 2002 for biomedical applications of computer vision and pattern recognition. He becomes editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging in 2003.

In 2010 he co-authors the elastix paper, a toolbox for intensity-based medical image registration.

The MICCAI Society gives him its Enduring Impact Award in 2015.
