Mark Bedau
Mark Bedau is a philosopher and artificial-life researcher whose work spans evolutionary systems and protocell science. He earned a philosophy PhD at UC Berkeley in 1985 and taught at Dartmouth before beginning to teach philosophy at Reed College in 1991. In 1997, he and collaborators applied evolutionary statistics developed with Norman Packard to Evita, an artificial-life model. He served as ProtoLife’s chief operating officer in 2007, coauthored a 2009 paper on protocell checkpoints, and was re-elected president of the International Society for Artificial Life in 2013. The society gave him its Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2025, and as of October 2026 he is Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed and directs its Artificial Life Lab.

A Berkeley philosophy PhD
He earns a PhD in philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985.
-
1991
From Dartmouth to Reed
He teaches at Dartmouth College for a number of years, working on philosophy of biology, philosophy of psychology and computational logic. He begins teaching philosophy at Reed College in 1991.
-
1997
Evolutionary statistics and Evita
Mark Bedau and Norman Packard develop a statistical method to classify evolutionary systems. In 1997, Bedau and collaborators apply these statistics to Evita, an artificial-life model, and conclude that Tierra-like systems lack the open-ended evolutionary signatures of naturally evolving systems.

Six protocell checkpoints
In 2009, he coauthors a paper that identifies six key checkpoints in protocell development and links them to ethical, social and regulatory issues in bottom-up synthetic biology.
