Eckhard Bick
Eckhard Bick is a computational linguist who builds parsers and language-technology systems. He earned a cand.med. degree at Bonn and a cand.mag. in Nordic languages, literature and Portuguese at Aarhus, then completed a linguistics doctorate for the PALAVRAS parser. He began leading VISL at the University of Southern Denmark in 1996 and co-founded GrammarSoft with John Dienhart by 2000; his research included the Floresta treebank, Dan2eng machine translation, and machine-learning grammar tuning. His work from 2025 to 2026 included the EspEraro error corpus, the CorpusEye manual, and studies of hate speech and Kiezdeutsch. As of October 2026, he is Associate Professor Emeritus in SDU's Department of Culture and Language.

1996–2000
VISL and GrammarSoft
In 1996, he becomes head of the VISL project at the University of Southern Denmark. By 2000, he co-founds GrammarSoft with John Dienhart, a language-technology company for grammatical annotation of running text and related applications.
-
2000
The PALAVRAS parser
In 2000, he earns a dr.phil. in Linguistics at Aarhus University for his thesis on PALAVRAS, a parser he develops for automatic grammatical analysis of Portuguese in a Constraint Grammar framework.

The Floresta treebank
In 2002, he coauthors a paper on Floresta Sintá(c)tica, a public Portuguese treebank built from PALAVRAS output.
-
2007–2012
Dan2eng and C-ORAL-BRASIL
In 2007, he presents Dan2eng, a wide-coverage, rule-governed Danish-English machine-translation system whose analysis and polysemy resolution rely on Constraint Grammar dependency trees. In 2012, he coauthors work that uses an adapted PALAVRAS parser to annotate the C-ORAL-BRASIL speech corpus.
-
2014
Machine-learning grammar tuning
In 2014, he publishes a method paper that uses machine learning to optimize and port linguist-written Constraint Grammars to another language.
-
2025–2026
EspEraro, CorpusEye and hate-speech research
In 2025, he publishes “An Annotated Error Corpus for Esperanto,” a multi-genre corpus that draws on learner, news and internet data. In March 2026, he publishes CorpusEye, a graphical interface for linguistically annotated corpora that searches morphology, syntax and semantics. His 2026 publications also include a coauthored study of Danish and German perceptions of hate speech and a paper on humour and stereotypes about immigrants and Germans in Kiezdeutsch.
