Researcher

Marius Lindauer

Marius Lindauer is a machine learning professor whose work automates the design and tuning of AI systems. He earned computer science degrees at Potsdam, researched AutoML in Freiburg, and co-founded the COSEAL network. His work includes challenge-winning AutoFolio and auto-sklearn systems, the hands-free Auto-sklearn 2.0 system, and ixAutoML, an ERC project that centers human users. Since 2025, he serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Deputy Head of Hannover's Institute of AI; in February 2026, he received an ERC Proof of Concept grant for AutoML Co-Designer.

Timeline

  1. 2005–2015

    Computer science at Potsdam

He earns a BSc in computer science at the University of Potsdam in 2008 and an MSc in 2010. He completes a PhD in computer science there in 2015.

  2. 2013

    Co-founding the COSEAL network

He co-founds COSEAL, an international, community-driven research network, in 2013.

  3. 2014–2019

Postdoc and research lead at Freiburg

He starts as a postdoctoral research fellow in Freiburg's AutoML.org group in 2014. From 2017, he leads a junior research group at Freiburg and develops methods for automated parameter tuning and algorithm selection.

  4. 2015–2016

    AutoML challenge wins

In 2015, he wins the ICON Challenge on algorithm selection with AutoFolio. In 2016, he wins the ChaLearn AutoML 5 challenge with auto-sklearn.

  5. Since 2019

    Professor at Hannover

He becomes Professor of Machine Learning at Leibniz University Hannover in 2019.

  6. 2022

    Auto-sklearn 2.0

He coauthors Auto-sklearn 2.0 in 2022, a hands-free AutoML system for designing machine-learning pipelines. Its PoSH variant uses meta-learning and a bandit strategy to allocate time budgets.

  7. 2022

    An ERC grant for ixAutoML

He receives an ERC Starting Grant for ixAutoML in 2022. The project brings developers' expertise and preferences into AutoML development.

  8. Since 2025

    Vice dean and deputy head

Since 2025, he serves as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Deputy Head of Leibniz University's Institute of AI. In February 2026, he receives an ERC Proof of Concept grant for AutoML Co-Designer, a prototype for interactive AI development with human developers.
