Reinhard F. Werner
Reinhard Werner is a mathematical physicist whose work on quantum information links quantum mechanics with information theory and computer science, bringing a complementary view of computation to AI. He studied physics at Clausthal, Marburg, and Rochester, then worked at Osnabrück before professorships in Braunschweig and Hannover. His research included Werner states, matrix product states, and cellular automata used in universal quantum computation. He received the International Quantum Award in 2014 and the Max Planck and Oskar Klein medals in 2025. He retired from Hannover in September 2023 and, as of October 2026, is an emeritus professor at Leibniz University Hannover.

Timeline
-
1954–1987
Physics study and doctorate
A mathematical physicist born in 1954, he studies physics at Clausthal, Marburg, and Rochester from 1970 to 1980, earns a doctorate in Marburg in 1982, and completes a theoretical-physics habilitation at Osnabrück in 1987.
-
1980–1996
Research at Osnabrück and Dublin
He works in the University of Osnabrück's physics department from 1980 to 1996, holds a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship in 1988–1989 and a Heisenberg Fellowship from 1989 to 1995, and researches at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies from 1988 to 1990.
-
1989–1992
Werner states and matrix product states
In 1989, he introduces Werner states, which yield EPR-type correlations and admit a hidden-variable model. In 1992, he joins Mark Fannes and Bruno Nachtergaele in introducing matrix product states that use few parameters to describe quantum states.
-
1997–2009
Professor in Braunschweig and Hannover
He becomes professor of mathematical physics at TU Braunschweig in April 1997 and holds the post through March 2009. In April 2009, he transfers to Leibniz University Hannover after an offer of the Leigh Trapnell Chair of Quantum Physics at Cambridge.
-
2010
Cellular automata for quantum computation
For the Automata 2010 proceedings, he studies cellular automata on Abelian groups with Johannes Gütschow and Vincent Nesme, explaining their fractal space-time diagrams. The paper describes these automata as a building block for universal quantum computation and as a way to generate highly entangled states.
-
2014
International Quantum Award
He receives the International Quantum Award with Nicolas Gisin in 2014.
-
2025
Max Planck and Oskar Klein medals
The German Physical Society awards him the Max Planck Medal in 2025 for theoretical work on quantum entanglement, nonlocality, and quantum information. Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences award him the Oskar Klein Medal in 2025. Quantum information connects quantum mechanics to information theory and computer science and forms a basis for quantum technologies.
-
As of October 2026
Emeritus professor at Hannover
He retires from the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Leibniz University Hannover in September 2023 after serving as a professor there since 2009. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor at Leibniz University Hannover, with the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Riemann Center for Geometry and Physics as former affiliations.
