Hans Burkhardt
Hans Burkhardt is a professor emeritus at Freiburg whose research applies invariants to pattern recognition. He earned a Dipl.-Ing. in electrical engineering in 1969, a Dr.-Ing. in 1974, and the Venia Legendi in 1979 at Karlsruhe. His career included an IBM research fellowship in 1980–1981, a Karlsruhe professorship beginning in 1981, a Hamburg professorship and institute directorship from 1985 to 1996, and a Freiburg chair beginning in 1996. His research included a 2000 report on content-based image and video retrieval and a 2004 chapter that extended Haar integrals to discrete structures. He chaired the European Conference on Computer Vision in 1998, led the German Association for Pattern Recognition from 2000 to 2006, and became an IAPR Fellow in 2002.

Timeline
-
1969–1979
Degrees at Karlsruhe
He earns a Dipl.-Ing. in electrical engineering in 1969 and a Dr.-Ing. in 1974 at the University of Karlsruhe; he gains the Venia Legendi in 1979. He begins as a research assistant in the Department of Measurement and Control in 1969.
-
1980–1996
Posts in Karlsruhe and Hamburg
He holds a scientific fellowship at IBM Research in San Jose in 1980–1981 and becomes professor for control and signal theory at Karlsruhe in 1981. From 1985 to 1996, he serves as a full professor at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and directs its Institute of Technical Computer Science I.
-
1996–1998
A Freiburg chair and ECCV
At the end of 1996, he takes a chair in pattern recognition and image processing at Freiburg's Institute of Computer Science. He chairs the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) in 1998.
-
2000–2006
DAGM and image retrieval
He becomes DAGM president in 2000 and serves through 2006. With Hans-Peter Kriegel and Remco Veltkamp, he coauthors the 2000 Dagstuhl report Content-Based Image and Video Retrieval.
-
2002
An IAPR fellowship
The IAPR names him a Fellow in its 2002 class for contributions to the theory and application of invariants to pattern recognition and for service to IAPR.
-
2004
Invariants for discrete structures
In a 2004 chapter, he extends Haar integrals over transformation groups to derive invariants for discrete structures.
-
As of October 2026
Professor emeritus at Freiburg
As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus in Freiburg's Pattern Recognition and Image Processing group.
