Researcher

Manfredi Maggiore

Manfredi Maggiore is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Toronto whose research links mathematical control, mechanics and robotics. He earned degrees in Genoa and Ohio, joined Toronto's Systems Control Group in 2000, and coauthored work on neural-network learning and feedback control for robotic motion. He coauthored books on flocking, rendezvous and robot-team coordination, and a 2025 paper on hybrid orbital stabilization for underactuated mechanical systems. He created the Robot Modeling and Control course, received Toronto's Faculty Teaching Award in 2018, and remains a full professor who teaches Advanced Engineering Mathematics in Fall 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1996–2000

Engineering degrees in Genoa and Ohio

He earns a Laurea with honours in electronic engineering from the University of Genoa in 1996 and a PhD in electrical engineering from Ohio State University in 2000, working with Kevin M. Passino.

  2. 2000–2018

    Joining Toronto's Systems Control Group

In September 2000, he joins the Systems Control Group in Toronto's ECE department. He serves as a visiting professor at the University of Bologna in 2007–2008 and at the Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes, Ecole CentraleSupélec, in 2015–2016, 2017 and 2018.

  3. 2002

    Learning in feedforward networks

In 2002, he coauthors “Optimization-based learning with bounded error for feedforward neural networks,” published in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks.

  4. 2011

    Robot Modeling and Control

In 2011, he creates the course Robot Modeling and Control, which becomes a core course for the Robotics and Mechatronics Minor and the Robotics Engineering major in U of T Engineering Science.

  5. 2013

    Virtual constraints for a bicycle

In 2013, he coauthors a study that uses virtual holonomic constraints to guide a bicycle model around a closed curve while keeping its roll angle and speed bounded.

  6. 2016

    Flocking and rendezvous

In 2016, he coauthors Flocking and Rendezvous in Distributed Robotics with Bruce A. Francis.

  7. 2018

    A faculty teaching award

He receives the University of Toronto Faculty Teaching Award in 2018.

  8. 2022

    Coordinating robot teams

In 2022, he coauthors Distributed Coordination Theory for Robot Teams with Ashton Roza and Luca Scardovi. The book presents distributed algorithms for quadrotor rendezvous and ground vehicles moving in formation.

  9. 2025

    Hybrid orbital stabilization

In 2025, he coauthors an IEEE Conference on Decision and Control paper on a hybrid orbital stabilizer for underactuated mechanical systems. He teaches ECE1658, Geometric Nonlinear Control of Robotic Systems, in Fall 2025.

  10. Since 2013

    Full professor at Toronto

The University of Toronto promotes him to full professor in 2013. He continues in its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Systems Control Group, and teaches Advanced Engineering Mathematics in Fall 2026. His research links mathematical control theory, mechanics and robotics.
