Researcher

Davide Maltoni

Davide Maltoni is a University of Bologna researcher whose work spans fingerprint recognition, continual learning, and language models. He co-founded BioLab in 1994, and its team developed SFinGe and organized four FVC competitions for fingerprint verification. He proposed the Minutiae Cylinder Code in 2009, and his collaborators introduced the CORe50 continual-learning benchmark in 2017. He co-authored the third edition of Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition in 2022, received IAPR's Senior Biometrics Investigator Award in 2024, and became an IEEE Fellow in 2025. As of October 2026, he is a full professor at Bologna and vice director of its Research Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.

Timeline

  1. 1994–2006

    BioLab and fingerprint tools

He and Dario Maio establish BioLab at the University of Bologna's Cesena campus in 1994. BioLab develops SFinGe in 2000 for synthetic fingerprint databases. From 2000 through 2006, it organizes four fingerprint-verification competitions: FVC2000, FVC2002, FVC2004, and FVC2006.

  2. 2009

    The Minutiae Cylinder Code

He proposes Minutiae Cylinder Code (MCC) in 2009, a fingerprint matcher that performs more than 150 million comparisons per second on a single PC.

  3. 2010–2012

    Fellow and associate professor

IAPR elects him a Fellow in 2010 for contributions to biometrics and fingerprint recognition. By 2012, he is an associate professor at the University of Bologna's Department of Electronics, Informatics and Systems.

  4. 2017

    The CORe50 benchmark

He and his collaborators introduce CORe50 in 2017 as a benchmark for continual learning in robotic vision.

  5. 2022

    A fingerprint handbook

He co-authors the third edition of Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition, published by Springer in 2022.

  6. 2024–2025

    An award and IEEE Fellowship

IAPR gives him its Senior Biometrics Investigator Award in 2024. IEEE elevates him to Fellow in 2025.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor at Bologna

He is a full professor at the University of Bologna and vice director of its Research Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. His 2026 research examines deductive logic in language models.
