Malay Kumar Kundu

Also known as Malay K. Kundu

Malay Kumar Kundu is an image-processing researcher whose work connects soft computing with mathematical methods. He trained in radio physics and electronics at the University of Calcutta, worked at Tata Steel, and joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 1982. In 2017, he coauthored an intelligent system for classifying Pap smear images, and he received IAPR and INAE fellowships in 2010 and 2013. As of October 2026, he is an AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting Professor at Calcutta University.

    Degrees in radio physics and electronics

    He earns a B.Tech. in radio physics and electronics from the University of Calcutta in 1972, an M.Tech. in the field in 1974, and a Ph.D. in 1991.

  2. 1976

    Process automation at Tata Steel

    In 1976, he joins Tata Iron and Steel Company's process automation group in Jamshedpur as an assistant research engineer.

    Joining the Indian Statistical Institute

    He joins the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata as a faculty member in 1982.

    In 2017, he coauthors an intelligent system for automatic categorization of Pap smear images to detect cervical dysplasia.
