Lingxi Xie

Also known as 谢凌曦, Ling-Xi Xie

Lingxi Xie is a computer-vision researcher at Huawei whose papers cover object detection, neural architecture search, vision backbones and AI weather forecasting. After earning a B.E. in 2010 and a Ph.D. in 2015 at Tsinghua University, where his paper won the ICMR 2015 best paper award, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Alan Yuille's CCVL lab at UCLA and Johns Hopkins from 2015 to 2019. In 2019, he joined Huawei's Noah's Ark Lab and coauthored CenterNet, then PC-DARTS, a 2023 Nature paper on Pangu-Weather, and VMamba in 2024. As of October 2026, he is a senior researcher at Huawei, and his 2026 paper LongVideo-R1 lists Huawei Consumer Business Group as his affiliation.

Timeline

  1. 2006–2015

Tsinghua degrees and a best paper

At Tsinghua University, he earns a B.E. in 2010 and a Ph.D. in engineering in 2015 under the supervision of Bo Zhang and Qi Tian of the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2015, his paper "Image Classification and Retrieval are ONE" wins the best paper award at ICMR 2015, and his doctoral thesis is selected as an Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis of Tsinghua University.

  2. 2015–2019

    Postdoc in Yuille's CCVL lab

From 2015 to 2019, he is a postdoctoral researcher in Alan Yuille's Computational Cognition, Vision, and Learning lab (CCVL), first at UCLA and from 2016 at Johns Hopkins University after the lab moves. In 2017, he and Yuille publish Genetic CNN at ICCV, which applies a genetic algorithm to learn deep network structures automatically.

  3. January 2019

    Joining Huawei's Noah's Ark Lab

In January 2019, he starts a new career as a senior researcher at Huawei's Noah's Ark Lab. Computer vision, deep learning and automated machine learning are among his research interests.

  4. 2019

    The CenterNet detector

CenterNet, coauthored with Kaiwen Duan, Song Bai, Honggang Qi, Qingming Huang and Qi Tian, appears at ICCV in 2019. The detector finds each object as a triplet of keypoints and reaches an AP of 47.0% on MS-COCO, ahead of all existing one-stage detectors by at least 4.9%.

  5. 2019–2020

    Architecture search with PC-DARTS

With Yuhui Xu and others, he coauthors PC-DARTS in 2019, a method that reaches a 2.57% error rate on CIFAR10 with 0.1 GPU-days of architecture search. In 2020, he is first author of a literature review on weight-sharing neural architecture search, which names the optimization gap between the super-network and the sub-architectures as the major challenge.

  6. 2022–2023

    Pangu-Weather in Nature

In November 2022, he joins Kaifeng Bi, Hengheng Zhang, Xin Chen, Xiaotao Gu and Qi Tian in presenting Pangu-Weather, a deep-learning system for global weather forecasts. Nature publishes the paper in July 2023, reporting that the program, trained on 39 years of global data, gives stronger deterministic forecasts on reanalysis data than the operational system of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in all tested variables.

  7. 2024

    The VMamba vision backbone

VMamba, coauthored with Yue Liu, Yunjie Tian, Yaowei Wang, Qixiang Ye and others, appears at NeurIPS in 2024. The paper adapts the Mamba state-space language model into a vision backbone with linear time complexity.

  8. As of October 2026

    Senior researcher at Huawei

He is a senior researcher at Huawei. The 2026 paper LongVideo-R1, which trains a multimodal language-model agent to navigate long videos efficiently, lists Huawei Consumer Business Group as his affiliation.
