Josien P. W. Pluim
Also known as Josien Pluim
Josien Pluim is a medical image analysis researcher whose work connects image registration and machine learning with clinical imaging. After graduating in computer science at the University of Groningen in 1996, she earned a PhD on multimodality image registration at UMC Utrecht in June 2001 and worked as an assistant and associate professor there, with a stint at Yale University's Image Processing and Analysis Group. She coauthored the elastix registration toolbox paper in January 2010, became a full professor at Eindhoven University of Technology in 2014 and a part-time professor at UMC Utrecht in 2015, was named a MICCAI Society Fellow in 2017, and coauthored a May 2019 survey of semi-supervised, multiple-instance and transfer learning in medical imaging. Following an August 2025 study on synthetic data and transfer learning for deformable image registration, she is professor and head of the Medical Image Analysis group and vice-dean of Biomedical Engineering at TU/e.
Timeline
-
1996
Computer science at Groningen
She graduates in computer science at the University of Groningen in 1996, specializing in scientific computing and imaging.
-
2001
A PhD in image registration
At UMC Utrecht's Image Sciences Institute, she researches multimodality image registration, focusing on mutual information as the registration measure. She receives her PhD in June 2001 and continues in the group as an assistant professor and later associate professor, with a short stint at Yale University's Image Processing and Analysis Group.
-
2010
The elastix toolbox and MICCAI
In January 2010, she coauthors the paper that introduces elastix, a toolbox for intensity-based medical image registration, in IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. She also serves as programme co-chair of MICCAI 2010, after chairing the Image Processing conference of SPIE Medical Imaging from 2006 to 2009.
-
2014–2015
Professorships at TU/e and Utrecht
Eindhoven University of Technology appoints her full professor of Medical Imaging in its Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2014. In 2015, she becomes a part-time professor of Medical Image Analysis at the Image Sciences Institute of UMC Utrecht.
-
2017
A MICCAI Society fellowship
The MICCAI Society names her a Fellow in 2017 for her contributions to medical image computing and service to the society.
-
May 2019
Surveying less-supervised medical imaging
In May 2019, she coauthors Not-so-supervised, a survey of semi-supervised, multiple-instance and transfer learning in medical imaging for diagnosis and segmentation tasks.
-
August 2025
Robust deformable image registration
In August 2025, she coauthors a paper on robust deformable image registration using synthetic data and transfer learning. Its results show that a fine-tuned model achieves the most consistent registration performance across datasets while requiring fewer training epochs and less target domain data than training from scratch.
-
As of October 2026
Professor, group head and vice-dean
She is professor of Medical Image Analysis and head of the Medical Image Analysis group (IMAG/e) at Eindhoven University of Technology, where she is also vice-dean for the Department of Biomedical Engineering, alongside a part-time professorship at UMC Utrecht's Image Sciences Institute. The group's work uses machine learning-based image analysis for neurological, cardiac and oncological applications.
