Bart M. ter Haar Romeny
Also known as Bart ter Haar Romeny
Bart M. ter Haar Romeny is a biomedical image-analysis researcher whose work connects visual perception, computer vision and medical screening. He studied applied physics at Delft and earned a doctorate at Utrecht before developing scale-space research there and becoming a professor of Biomedical Image Analysis at Eindhoven. His interactive Mathematica book explored multiscale vision, and his RetinaCheck project built automated screening for diabetic eye damage in China. In 2022, he was invited to write about AI in medicine, and in 2023 he taught explainable deep learning at DeepLearn. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus of Biomedical Image Analysis at Eindhoven University of Technology.

Timeline
-
1952–1983
Applied physics and a doctorate
He is born in Linschoten in 1952 and leaves home at 18 to study applied physics at Delft University of Technology. He receives an MSc there in 1978 and a PhD from Utrecht University in 1983.
-
1986–1989
Clinical physics and PACS
At Utrecht University Hospital's Radiology Department, he works as principal physicist and serves as clinical project leader for the Dutch Picture Archiving and Communication Systems project from 1986 to 1989.
-
1989–2001
Scale-Space in Utrecht
From 1989 to 2001, he is associate professor at Utrecht University's Image Sciences Institute. He founds the Scale-Space conference series in Utrecht in 1989; it is later renamed the Scale-Space and Variational Methods series.
-
2001–2017
Professor and interactive vision book
In 2001, he is appointed full professor of Biomedical Image Analysis in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he retires in 2017. In 2003, he publishes Front-End Vision and Multi-Scale Image Analysis, an interactive Mathematica book on multi-scale computer vision and medical image analysis inspired by visual neuroscience.
-
By 2007
Vice dean in Shenyang
He serves as vice dean for education at Northeastern University's Biomedical and Information Engineering School in Shenyang. He represents TU/e on the school's joint management team with Northeastern, Philips and Neusoft.
-
2013–2019
Leading RetinaCheck
In 2013, he starts the Sino-Dutch RetinaCheck project to screen for early diabetic eye damage in China. It concludes in 2019 after producing 55 peer-reviewed papers, four PhD theses, a deep-learning patent and retinal-analysis software.
-
2022–2023
AI medicine and DeepLearn
In the project's second half, his team introduces residual neural networks and trains them to detect micro-aneurisms and early signs of diabetes. In 2022, he is invited to write an introductory chapter for Springer Nature's Artificial Intelligence in Medicine; in 2023, he teaches Explainable Deep Learning from First Principles at DeepLearn Spring.
-
As of October 2026
Professor emeritus at Eindhoven
He is professor emeritus of Biomedical Image Analysis at TU/e's Department of Biomedical Engineering. Since 2014, he has been a visiting professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, and since 2017, an honorary chair professor in Medical Image Analysis at National Taiwan University of Science & Technology in Taipei.
