Jiří Šťastný

Jiří Šťastný is a Czech computer scientist who applies neural networks, evolutionary algorithms and other artificial intelligence methods to classification, prediction and optimization. Born in Brno in 1953, he trained as an engineer at Brno University of Technology and earned an RNDr. in mathematical computer science at Masaryk University in 1987. After lecturing at Brno University of Technology's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 1982, he became a professor at both that university and Mendel University in Brno in 2012. His work includes a 2018 system that recognized bird species from their songs, a 2021 graph-based algorithm for job shop scheduling, and web servers for DNA structure analysis such as Palindrome analyser and the G4Hunter web application. He is a university professor in Mendel University's Department of Informatics; in 2025 he supervised Z-DNA Hunter, a tool that predicts Z-DNA forming sequences across whole genomes, and in 2026 he coauthored a dataset for machine-learning prediction of Z-DNA-forming loci.

Timeline

  1. 1953–1987

    Engineering and mathematics degrees

He is born in Brno in 1953. He earns an Ing. degree in instrumentation, regulation and automation technique at Brno University of Technology's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1978 and a CSc. there in 1984. At Masaryk University's Faculty of Sciences, he completes a Mgr. in 1986 and an RNDr. in 1987, both in mathematical computer science.

  2. 1982–2006

Senior lecturer at Brno University of Technology

In 1982, he becomes a senior lecturer in the Department of Instrumentation and Automation Technique at Brno University of Technology's Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, with a 1989–1991 post as a research worker at VUVL Brno. He takes academic internships at Magdeburg University of Technology in 1987 and Graz University of Technology in 1995, and from 1994 to 2006 he lectures at the faculty's Institute of Automation and Computer Science.

  3. 2006–2012

    Associate professor at two universities

In 2006, he becomes an associate professor at Brno University of Technology's Institute of Automation and Computer Science and at the Department of Informatics in Mendel University's Faculty of Business and Economics. In September 2007, he and Vladislav Škorpil publish "Advanced Algorithms in Neural networks", which applies a genetic algorithm to design a neural network's configuration and to train the network. His projects from 2007 to 2009 include the GACR research project Advanced Optimisation of Communications Systems Design by Means of Neural Networks.

  4. 2011–2012

    Professor of managerial computer science

In 2011, he joins an expert consultative body of MEYS CR, the Czech education ministry, for research, development and innovation. He becomes a professor in managerial computer science through Mendel University's Faculty of Business and Economics in 2012, and from 2012 he holds professorships at Mendel's Department of Informatics and at Brno University of Technology's Institute of Automation and Computer Science.

  5. 2016–2019

    Web servers for DNA structures

With Václav Brázda and colleagues, he coauthors Palindrome analyser in 2016, a web-based server that predicts and evaluates inverted repeats in DNA and RNA sequences. In 2019, the team, joined by Jean-Louis Mergny, publishes the G4Hunter web application, a web server for G-quadruplex prediction that retrieves sequences from NCBI databases.

  6. 2018

    Recognizing birds by their songs

In December 2018, with Michal Munk and Luboš Juránek, he publishes an automatic bird species recognition system based on bird vocalization. It trains one hidden Markov model for each of 18 species from 6 families and reaches 81.2% success across species and 90.45% for classification into families.

  7. 2021

Job shop scheduling by graph search

In 2021, he publishes a graph-based scheduling algorithm with Vladislav Škorpil, Zoltán Balogh and Richard Klein, built on Generalized Lifelong Planning A*, a method usually used for mobile robot path planning. Tested on the Job Shop Scheduling Problem against a classic genetic algorithm, it finds solutions faster in most cases.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Mendel University

He is a university professor in Mendel University's Department of Informatics and a professor at Brno University of Technology's Institute of Automation and Computer Science, working on neural networks and evolutionary algorithms for data classification and prediction. In 2025, he conceives and supervises Z-DNA Hunter, a web server that predicts Z-DNA forming sequences across whole genomes and cuts runtime from hours to seconds. With Michal Petrovič and Oldřich Trenz, he coauthors the Z-DNA AI Dataset in 2026, a multi-species dataset for machine-learning prediction of Z-DNA-forming loci.
