Researcher

Tomas Mikolov

Also known as Tomáš Mikolov

Tomas Mikolov is an AI researcher whose work spans recurrent language models, word representations and natural language processing. His career runs from the RNNLM toolkit and a Brno doctorate to word2vec at Google Brain, fastText and fundamental AI research at Facebook AI, and a CIIRC group focused on complex systems. The Neuron Award named him a laureate in 2019, and his 2013 paper on word and phrase representations received NeurIPS's 2023 Test of Time Award. As of October 2026, ELLIS lists him as a Fellow at CTU Prague, and BottleCap AI lists him as Co-Founder and CSO.

Timeline

  1. 2010

    Training recurrent language models

The RNNLM toolkit, published in 2010, enabled training of large recurrent neural networks and produced benchmark results in language modeling, speech recognition, machine translation and text generation.

  2. 2012

    A doctorate in language models

At Brno University of Technology, he completed a PhD in 2012 on recurrent neural networks and language models.

  3. 2013

    Word vectors at Google Brain

At Google Brain, he developed word2vec, an algorithm for learning word representations. His 2013 ICLR paper with coauthors proposed two neural architectures for learning word vectors from large data sets.

  4. 2014–2019

    Research across two fronts

He moved to Facebook AI in 2014 for fundamental AI research and continued applied natural language work through the fastText project. At the start of 2019, he became a Neuron Award laureate for a scientific discovery in artificial intelligence and computer science.

  5. April 2020

    A research group in Prague

He joined CIIRC CTU as head of a research group at the RICAIP centre. The group set out to study complex systems as a path toward strong artificial intelligence.

  6. 2023

A paper earns a time award

The 2013 paper Distributed Representations of Words and Phrases and their Compositionality received the 2023 NeurIPS Test of Time Award. It presented improvements to Skip-gram and methods for learning phrase vectors.

  7. As of October 2026

    A fellowship and a company

ELLIS lists him as a Fellow at Czech Technical University in Prague. BottleCap AI lists him as Co-Founder and CSO.
