Wanli Ouyang
Also known as Wan-Li Ouyang, 歐陽萬里
Wanli Ouyang works on computer vision and AI for science, from pedestrian detection to the FengWu weather model. He received a PhD in electronic engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and, with Xiaogang Wang, published Joint Deep Learning for Pedestrian Detection in 2013. He led a team to first place in the ImageNet ILSVRC Challenge in 2015 and 2016, took first place in the 2018 COCO object detection Challenge, and in 2021 received an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship as an associate professor at the University of Sydney. As of October 2026, he is a professor and Global STEM Scholar in the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a professor at Shanghai AI Lab.

Pedestrian detection at ICCV
He receives a PhD from the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2013 he and Xiaogang Wang publish Joint Deep Learning for Pedestrian Detection at ICCV.
-
2015–2016
First place on ImageNet
He leads a team that ranks first in the ImageNet ILSVRC Challenge in 2015 and in 2016. With Xingyu Zeng, he shares equal contribution on Crafting GBD-Net for Object Detection, the winning entry in the 2016 ImageNet challenge.
-
2018
First place on COCO
He takes first place in the 2018 COCO object detection Challenge.
-
2021
An ARC Future Fellowship
In August 2021 the Australian Research Council names him a Future Fellow. As an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, he designs a framework that learns how to use training samples for object detection and image classification.

2023
The FengWu weather model
In April 2023 he is one of the developers of FengWu, a deep-learning weather model at Shanghai AI Laboratory. The system produces a global forecast for the next 10 days in 30 seconds and extends the forecast range to 10.75 days based on reanalysis data. It is deployed operationally at the China Meteorological Administration, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, and the Hong Kong Observatory.

April 2024
A transactions best paper award
In April 2024 he receives a Transactions Best Paper Award.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at CUHK and Shanghai
He is a professor and Global STEM Scholar in the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a professor at Shanghai AI Lab, and an adjunct professor at CUHK-Shenzhen. In January 2025 he is principal investigator of a Research Grants Council project on tropical cyclone forecasting driven by a large-scale meteorological model. His research covers computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, and AI for science.
