Wang Xiaogang

As of October 2026, Wang Xiaogang is co-founder, executive director, chief technology officer and executive vice president of SenseTime, where he oversees the company’s research team. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in July 2001, an MPhil from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in December 2003, and a PhD in computer science from MIT in June 2009, then joined CUHK as an assistant professor in August 2009 and became a professor in August 2020. In August 2014 a CUHK team led by Xiaoou Tang and him reached 99.15 percent accuracy on Labeled Faces in the Wild, where human accuracy is 97.53 percent, and in October 2014 he founded SenseTime with Tang and Dahua Lin. His CUvideo team won the ILSVRC 2015 challenge on object detection in videos, and he received the Hong Kong RGC Early Career Award in 2012, a PAMI Young Researcher Award honourable mention in 2016, and the Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award in 2022. In December 2025, as co-founder and chairman of ACE Robotics, he announced the Kairos 3.0 world model.

  1. 2001–2009

    Degrees from USTC to MIT

    He earns a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering and information science from the Special Class of Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China in July 2001. An MPhil from the Chinese University of Hong Kong comes in December 2003, and a PhD in computer science from MIT comes in June 2009.

  2. Since August 2009

    Professor at CUHK

    He joins the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an assistant professor in August 2009. Promotion to professor follows in August 2020.

  3. August 2014

    Face recognition at 99.15 percent

    In August 2014 a CUHK team led by Xiaoou Tang and Xiaogang Wang builds a face-recognition system that reaches 99.15 percent accuracy on Labeled Faces in the Wild. Human accuracy on that set is 97.53 percent. The result is the first time algorithms reach human face-verification performance on the dataset.

    Co-founding SenseTime

    In October 2014 he founds SenseTime with Xiaoou Tang and Dahua Lin.

  5. 2015

    An ImageNet video win

    His CUvideo team wins the ILSVRC 2015 challenge of object detection in videos with provided data, at a mean average precision of 67.8 percent. The second-place team reaches 35.9 percent.

  6. 2012–2022

    Awards and a directorship

    He receives the Hong Kong RGC Early Career Award in 2012 and an honourable mention of the PAMI Young Researcher Award from the IEEE Computer Society in 2016. SenseTime appoints him a director in October 2016 and re-designates him an executive director in August 2021. In 2022 he wins the inaugural Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award for contributions in deep learning and artificial intelligence for face recognition, object detection, and person re-identification.

  7. 2025

    Highly cited and Kairos 3.0

    Clarivate names him a Highly Cited Researcher in 2025. In December 2025, as co-founder and chairman of ACE Robotics, he announces Kairos 3.0, an open-source world model already in commercial use. He describes Kairos 3.0 as a three-stage architecture of multimodal understanding and fusion, a synthesis network, and behavior prediction.

    He is co-founder, executive director, chief technology officer and executive vice president of SenseTime, and he oversees the group’s research team. He is a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since June 2019 he has chaired the China Augmented Reality Core Technology Industry Alliance.
