Chen Change Loy

Also known as C. Loy, Chen Loy, Cavan Loy

Chen Change Loy is an AI and computer-vision researcher whose work includes image super-resolution, video restoration, generative models, and visual recognition. He earned a first-class honours B.Eng. in electronic engineering in 2005 and a computer science PhD in 2010, and held research posts at MIMOS, Queen Mary University of London, Vision Semantics, and CUHK. His papers include SRCNN in 2014, ESRGAN in 2018, and BasicVSR in 2021, which address image super-resolution and video restoration. In 2025, he received IIT Bombay’s International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology with Madhavi Srinivasan. He is Tan Lip-Bu Professor in Artificial Intelligence at NTU and director of MMLab@NTU; he began the professorship in June 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2010

    Early research and study

At MIMOS in Malaysia, he works as a research assistant from March 2004 to May 2004, an associate researcher from May 2005 to July 2007, and a researcher from July 2007 to August 2007. He earns a first-class honours B.Eng. in electronic engineering at the University of Science Malaysia in 2005 and a computer science PhD at Queen Mary University of London in 2010.

  2. 2010–2013

    Two postdoctoral appointments

He works as a postdoctoral researcher at Queen Mary University of London from December 2010 to December 2011 and at Vision Semantics from January 2012 to February 2013.

  3. 2013–2018

    Research professor at CUHK

He joins the Multimedia Laboratory at The Chinese University of Hong Kong as a Research Assistant Professor in March 2013 and serves there through July 2018.

  4. 2014

    A CNN for image super-resolution

In a 2014 arXiv preprint, he and three coauthors propose a deep convolutional network that maps low-resolution images to high-resolution images.

  5. 2018

    ESRGAN for image super-resolution

In 2018, he coauthors ESRGAN, an enhanced generative adversarial network that improves single-image super-resolution through changes to its architecture, adversarial loss, and perceptual loss.

  6. 2021

    BasicVSR for video restoration

In 2021, he coauthors BasicVSR, a video super-resolution pipeline built around propagation, alignment, aggregation, and upsampling.

  7. 2025

    An award and adjunct post

He receives the IIT Bombay International Award for Excellence in Research in Engineering and Technology with Madhavi Srinivasan in 2025. In August 2025, he becomes an adjunct professor at CUHK. His AI and computer-vision work includes image and video super-resolution, generative models, and visual recognition.

  8. Since June 2026

    Tan Lip-Bu Professor

In June 2026, he becomes Tan Lip-Bu Professor in Artificial Intelligence at NTU and director of MMLab@NTU. He serves as Program Co-Chair of CVPR 2026.
