Jérôme Euzenat

Jérôme Euzenat is a computer scientist at INRIA in Grenoble whose work on knowledge representation helped define the field of ontology matching, which finds correspondences between related entities of different ontologies. After engineering jobs that included Bull-Cediag's artificial intelligence division and a 1990 doctorate on reasoning maintenance systems, he joined INRIA Rhône-Alpes in 1992 and led its Exmo team from 2000 to 2016. In 2004, he presented an Alignment API for publishing ontology alignments on the web and joined the steering committee of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative; with Pavel Shvaiko, he wrote the book Ontology Matching, published by Springer in 2007 and revised in 2013. Elected an ECCAI (now EurAI) Fellow in 2014, he started the mOeX team in 2017 to study artificial cultural knowledge evolution among people and agents. Today he is a senior research scientist who heads mOeX and teaches knowledge representation at Université Grenoble Alpes.

Timeline

  1. 1988–1992

    Engineering and a Grenoble PhD

After studying computer science at the University of Paris 7, he works as an engineer at Cognitech from 1988 to 1989 and in Bull-Cediag's artificial intelligence division from 1989 to 1991. He earns a PhD in informatics from Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble in 1990 with work on reasoning maintenance systems, then works for Ilog in 1992.

  2. 1992–1999

    Joining INRIA Rhône-Alpes

After a year lecturing at the ENSIMAG engineering school, he joins INRIA Rhône-Alpes in 1992 and works in the Sherpa project on object-based knowledge representation, then from 1995 to 1999 on collaborative building of consensual knowledge bases. In 1998, he co-edits the INRIA book Langages et modèles à objets with Roland Ducournau, Gérald Masini and others. He receives his habilitation from Joseph Fourier University in 1999.

  3. 2000–2016

    Leading the Exmo team

From 2000 to 2016, he leads the INRIA Exmo team, which he sets up to work on computer-mediated communication of structured knowledge. The team contributes to the take-off of the semantic web and linked data.

  4. 2004

    An API for ontology alignment

In 2004, at the International Semantic Web Conference in Hiroshima, he presents a format for expressing ontology alignments in RDF, so that they can be published on the web, together with an Alignment API that implements it. He also joins the organiser steering committee of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative in 2004.

  5. 2007–2013

    The Ontology Matching book

He helps define and develop the field of ontology matching, which finds correspondences between semantically related entities of different ontologies. With Pavel Shvaiko, he writes Ontology Matching, published by Springer in 2007, as an answer to the semantic heterogeneity problem faced by computer systems. A thoroughly revised second edition with more than 150 pages of new content appears in 2013.

  6. 2014

    An ECCAI fellowship

In 2014, he is elected a Fellow of ECCAI, now the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI).

  7. 2017–2019

    Founding the mOeX team

In 2017, he starts the mOeX team with colleagues to study how people and agents keep a reasonable understanding through formal knowledge while preserving knowledge diversity, a line of work he calls artificial cultural knowledge evolution. In 2019, he gives the keynote "For knowledge" at ISWC 2019, the 18th International Semantic Web Conference, on making knowledge evolve by drawing on cultural evolution and evolutionary epistemology.

  8. As of October 2026

    Head of the mOeX team

He is a senior research scientist (directeur de recherche) at INRIA in Grenoble, where he heads the mOeX team and teaches knowledge representation at Université Grenoble Alpes. In June 2025, he gives a Distinguished Lecture at Paderborn University on cultural knowledge evolution in artificial agent societies.
