Jerome Bellegarda
Also known as Jerome R. Bellegarda
Jerome Bellegarda is a speech and language scientist who introduced tied mixtures to acoustic modeling and latent semantics to language modeling. After a 1987 PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester, he worked on automatic speech and handwriting recognition at IBM's research center in Yorktown Heights, New York, from 1988 to 1994. He joined Apple in 1994, spent 28 years there leading human language technologies, and was instrumental in the due diligence behind Apple's acquisition of Siri. The International Speech Communication Association named him a Fellow in 2013 for contributions to statistical modeling algorithms, and leadership in their application to human language processing. Today he is a Distinguished Scientist at Etsy, where he has led generative AI efforts across the company's activities since 2023.
Timeline
-
1987
A Rochester PhD
He receives a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, in 1987.
-
1988–1994
Speech recognition at IBM
From 1988 to 1994, he works on automatic speech and handwriting recognition as a Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. In 1994, he coauthors "The Hub and Spoke Paradigm for CSR Evaluation" with Francis Kubala, Roni Rosenfeld and nine other researchers.
-
1994
Joining Apple in Cupertino
He joins Apple in Cupertino, California, in 1994. Among his contributions to speech and language work, he introduces tied mixtures in acoustic modeling and latent semantics in language modeling, and many of his innovations go into Apple products. He is instrumental in the due diligence that leads to Apple's acquisition of Siri and its integration into the Apple ecosystem.
-
2010
Latent semantic mapping
In June 2010, he publishes "Emotion Analysis Using Latent Affective Folding and Embedding" at a NAACL HLT workshop in Los Angeles. In a talk to the Stanford NLP Group, he presents latent semantic mapping, a data-driven framework that broadens latent semantic analysis to model global relationships in large volumes of data that need not be text.
-
2013
An ISCA fellowship
In 2013, the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) names him a Fellow for contributions to statistical modeling algorithms, and leadership in their application to human language processing. His paper "Spoken Language Understanding for Natural Interaction" appears at the SIGDIAL 2013 conference in Metz, France, in August 2013.
-
2017–2018
Chairing ISCA fellow selection
He chairs ISCA's Fellow Selection Committee for its 2017/18 term; the seven-member committee selects the association's new Fellows.
-
2019–2022
Input intelligence at Apple
In May 2019, as Apple Distinguished Scientist in Human Language Technologies and a Fellow of both the IEEE and ISCA, he gives the seminar "Input & Intelligence @ Apple" at KU Leuven. The IEEE Signal Processing Society names him one of its 2022 Distinguished Industry Speakers. In May 2022, as Apple Distinguished Scientist in Intelligent System Experience, he gives the talk "Input Intelligence on Mobile Devices" to a joint meeting of two IEEE chapters in Atlanta.
-
Since 2023
Generative AI at Etsy
Since 2023, he is a Distinguished Scientist at Etsy, where he leads generative AI efforts across the company's activities. He comes to Etsy after 28 years leading human language technologies as a Distinguished Scientist at Apple.
