Gérard Bailly
Also known as Gerard Bailly, Bailly Gerard
Gérard Bailly is a permanent CNRS staff member and a visitor at GIPSA-Lab, where his work connects speech synthesis with multimodal interaction and social robotics. He earned an engineering diploma and a doctorate in electronics in Grenoble, then began research at INRS-Télécommunications in Montreal before joining CNRS in Grenoble. He led ICP's Synthesis group, held leadership roles at GIPSA-Lab and ISCA, and operated Nina, a humanoid robot used to study social communication. ISCA named him a Fellow in 2023. His recent work includes Cued Speech generation from text, data-driven control of robot eye and head movements, and end-to-end text-to-speech research.

Electronics training in Grenoble
He earns an engineering diploma in electronics in 1981 and a doctorate in electronics at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 1983.
-
1983–2007
From Montreal to CNRS Grenoble
He joins INRS-Télécommunications in Montreal as a research assistant in 1983. At ICP in Grenoble, he becomes a CNRS research scientist in 1986, a research director in 2001, and moves to GIPSA-Lab in 2007.
-
1990–2006
Synthesis leadership at ICP
He leads ICP's Synthesis group from 1990 to 2004 and serves as deputy director of the ELESA research federation from 2002 to 2006. He coauthors Talking Machines: Theories, Models and Designs in 1992 and Improvements in Speech Synthesis in 2002.
-
2008–2020
GIPSA-Lab and ISCA leadership
He becomes deputy director of GIPSA-Lab and head of its Speech and Cognition department in 2008. From 2013 to 2020, he serves on the ISCA board and leads the CRISSP team from 2015 to 2020.
-
2018
Nina and machine learning
In 2018, he operates Nina, GIPSA-Lab's humanoid robot, while the research team uses machine learning to teach the robot speech and nonverbal communication for face-to-face interaction.
-
2023
A speech synthesis workshop
In August 2023, he chairs the 12th ISCA Speech Synthesis Workshop in Grenoble and coauthors "Advocating for text input in multi-speaker text-to-speech systems."
-
2023
An ISCA Fellowship
In 2023, ISCA names him a Fellow.
-
As of October 2026
Visitor at GIPSA-Lab
He is a visitor in GIPSA-Lab's Speech and Cognition department and holds permanent CNRS staff status. In 2025, he coauthors an approach for Cued Speech generation from text with a pretrained audiovisual TTS model that infers hand and lip movements, and a paper on data-driven eye and head movement control in triadic human-robot interactions. In 2026, he coauthors a study of internal representations in end-to-end TTS models.
