James Elder
James Elder is a vision scientist at York University who studies how biological vision can improve machine vision. A McGill doctorate in electrical engineering in 1995, under Steven Zucker, started a career that brought him a Tier I York Research Chair in Human and Computer Vision in 2018. In 2019, a deep-learning puck-tracking system built with PhD candidate Hemanth Pidaparthy was presented at the IEEE Winter Conference on Applications in Computer Vision, and Elder is also a co-founder of the AI start-up AttentiveVision. York's Centre for AI & Society, which he co-leads, officially launched in July 2022. As of October 2026, he is a professor and the centre's director, and he works on CINTHeA, an initiative developing AI-powered robotic assistants for older adults.

A McGill doctorate
A PhD in electrical engineering from McGill University follows in 1995, with the thesis The Visual Computation of Bounding Contours under advisor Steven W. Zucker.
-
2015–2021
NSERC CREATE data training
From 2015 to 2021, the $1.65M NSERC CREATE Training Program in Data Analytics & Visualization runs under his leadership.
-
2018
Tier I York Research Chair
York University appoints him in 2018 as York Research Chair in Human and Computer Vision, a joint Tier I chair of the Lassonde School of Engineering and the Faculty of Health.
-
2019
Attentive puck tracking
In 2019, he and PhD candidate Hemanth Pidaparthy present a deep learning-based system for attentive puck tracking at the IEEE Winter Conference on Applications in Computer Vision, while a prototype records York Lions varsity home games for the 2018-19 season. The system follows the play and delivers zoomed video similar to an NHL broadcast. Elder is also a co-founder of the AI start-up AttentiveVision.

July 2022
Launching York's AI centre
York's Centre for AI & Society officially launches in July 2022, and Elder and Osgoode Hall Law School professor Pina D'Agostino guide it. In March 2024, he co-heads the centre, which focuses on AI systems for health care, smart cities and sustainability.
-
July 2025
Directing the AI centre
In July 2025, York's research newsletter features him as director of the Centre for AI & Society. Two focus areas have emerged there: AI for mobility and social robotics in health care.
-
As of October 2026
Robots for healthy aging
He is a professor and York Research Chair in Human and Computer Vision and director of the Centre for AI & Society at York University, with research that covers contour processing, single-view 3D reconstruction and socially-aware robotics. In June 2026, York's Mobility Innovation Centre highlights his work on CINTHeA, an initiative developing AI-powered robotic assistants for older adults.
