John Tsotsos

Also known as John K. Tsotsos, John Konstantine Tsotsos

John Tsotsos is a computer scientist at York University, known for his work on visual attention in computer vision and robotics. He earned a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in 1980 and led that university's Computer Vision Group for 20 years. His Selective Tuning theory of visual attention appeared in Artificial Intelligence in 1995. He moved to York in 2000 to direct the Centre for Vision Research, and in 2020 CS-Can|Info-Can gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in Computer Science. As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Research Professor of Vision Science at York's Lassonde School of Engineering.

Timeline

  1. 1974–1980

    A doctorate on visual motion

He earns a BASc in Engineering Science in 1974, an MSc in 1976 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1980, all at the University of Toronto. His doctoral work builds the first AI computer system to interpret visual motion in digital image sequences, applied to heart motion analysis.

  2. 1980

    Founding the Computer Vision Group

At the University of Toronto in 1980, he founds the Computer Vision Group and leads it for 20 years.

  3. 1991–1995

    The Selective Tuning theory

He presents a neural network method for visual attention in 1991, and in 1995 the method appears in Artificial Intelligence as part of his Selective Tuning theory. He and his students are the first to propose strategies for active object recognition by a robot.

  4. 2000–2006

Directing the Centre for Vision Research

In 2000 he joins York University as director of the Centre for Vision Research, a post he holds until November 2006.

  5. 2010–2015

The Sir John William Dawson Medal

He is elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2010. In 2015 he receives its Sir John William Dawson Medal, the first computer scientist to be so honoured.

  6. 2014–2024

The Centre for Innovation in Computing

He becomes founding director of the Centre for Innovation in Computing at Lassonde in 2014 and holds the post until June 2024.

  7. 2020

    A Lifetime Achievement Award

In 2020 CS-Can|Info-Can gives him its Lifetime Achievement Award in Computer Science, the first computer vision researcher to receive that honour.

  8. As of October 2026

    Distinguished Research Professor at York

In the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at York's Lassonde School of Engineering, he is a Distinguished Research Professor of Vision Science.
