Inhi Kim

Also known as 김인희

Inhi Kim is a transport researcher at KAIST who applies traffic simulation and generative AI to mobility, including Physical AI. After studying at Kongju National University, he worked from 2007 to 2012 as a transportation engineer, planner and software developer at PTV Group and earned a PhD in civil engineering at the University of Queensland in 2014. A lecturer at Monash University from 2015 and a senior lecturer from 2019, he became an associate professor at Kongju National University in 2020 and joined KAIST's Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Mobility in 2023. In 2021, he coauthored a Traffic4cast paper on city-wide traffic prediction with 3DResNet and Sparse-UNet models, and a 2025 video showed a tele-driving experiment by Dochack, a startup he founded. He is an associate professor at KAIST and an adjunct professor at the KAIST AI College, and a team he co-leads was selected in 2026 for a Physical AI talent program with Lotte Innovate.

Timeline

  1. 2005–2012

    Kongju degrees and PTV Group

He earns a bachelor's degree in 2005 and a master's degree in urban and transportation engineering in 2007, both at Kongju National University in Korea. From August 2007 to January 2012, he works for the German transport software company PTV Group as a transportation engineer, planner and software developer.

  2. 2014

    A Queensland doctorate

He completes a PhD in civil engineering at the University of Queensland in 2014. His thesis topic is the three most promising low-cost interventions for improving safety at railway crossings, studied with the CARRS-Q driving simulator and Vissim traffic simulation.

  3. 2015–2020

    Lecturer at Monash University

He joins the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne as a lecturer in 2015 and becomes a senior lecturer in 2019. His post supports the Master of Transportation Systems at the Southeast University Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China.

  4. 2020–2022

    Associate professor at Kongju

He holds an associate professorship in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Kongju National University from September 2020 to December 2022. In September 2020, he also becomes an adjunct senior lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University.

  5. 2021

    Traffic4cast with 3DResNet

In 2021, he coauthors a paper with Bo Wang, Reza Mohajerpoor, Chen Cai and Hai L. Vu for the IARAI Traffic4cast 2021 competition on predicting city-wide traffic states. The paper tests 3DResNet and Sparse-UNet models for forecasting traffic speed and flow, and both achieve much better performance than the baseline algorithms.

  6. 2023–2024

    Associate professor at KAIST

He joins the Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Mobility at KAIST as an associate professor in 2023. In September 2024, he also takes an adjunct post at New York University.

  7. 2025

    Tele-driving and PTV training

A video posted in March 2025 shows a tele-driving experiment by Dochack, a startup he founded, in which a simulator at KAIST's Munji campus operates a vehicle at the Jeju Techno Park. In August 2025, he and two KAIST colleagues become Korea's first PTV Certified Trainers, able to give official PTV software training at KAIST.

  8. As of October 2026

    Physical AI at KAIST

He is an associate professor at KAIST's Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Mobility and an adjunct professor at the KAIST AI College, where his core AI competencies include generative AI, foundation models, and reinforcement learning and control. His TUPA lab uses LLMs and deep generative models to build synthetic populations and activity schedules for network-level traffic simulation. In May 2026, a team he co-leads is selected for a 2026 generative AI talent program hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and IITP, spearheading Physical AI talent development with Lotte Innovate from April 2026 to December 2029.
