Researcher

Hugo Zbinden

Hugo Zbinden is a quantum-information scientist named among the 2026 Digital Shapers' Quantum Leapers; AI and quantum computing are developing in parallel and beginning to reinforce each other. He earned an M.Sc. in climate physics and a PhD in laser physics at the University of Bern, joined Geneva in 1993, and helped develop the first real-world quantum key distribution systems and single-photon detectors. He co-founded ID Quantique in 2001, led Geneva's Quantum Technologies group as an associate professor from 2012 to 2023, and received the 2016 Heinrich-Greinacher Prize and 2017 Medal of Innovation. In 2023, he became an honorary professor at Geneva; as of October 2026, he leads the Quantum Communication Technology Group at VQCC.

Timeline

  1. 1987–1991

    Degrees at Bern

He earns an M.Sc. in climate physics at the University of Bern in 1987 and a PhD in laser physics there in 1991.

  2. 1993–2001

    Quantum cryptography in Geneva

He joins the University of Geneva's Department of Applied Physics as a postdoctoral researcher in 1993 and helps develop the first real-world quantum key distribution systems and single-photon detectors. In October 2001, he co-founds ID Quantique with Nicolas Gisin, Grégoire Ribordy, and Olivier Guinnard.

  3. 2012–2023

    Leading Geneva's Quantum Technologies group

In 2012, he becomes an associate professor at the University of Geneva and launches its Quantum Technologies group. He leads the group's work on quantum key distribution systems, single-photon detectors, and networks through 2023.

  4. 2016

    The Heinrich-Greinacher Prize

He receives the 2016 Heinrich-Greinacher Prize for work in quantum optics and quantum cryptography.

  5. 2017

    A Medal of Innovation

ID Quantique's co-founders, including Zbinden, receive the University of Geneva's Medal of Innovation in 2017 for the company's contribution to the scientific community.

  6. 2023

    Retiring as Geneva honorary professor

He retires from Geneva's Department of Applied Physics in 2023 and becomes an honorary professor. He continues part-time work on quantum key distribution.

  7. 2026

    Listed among Quantum Leapers

The 2026 Digital Shapers name him among their Quantum Leapers, who work on quantum computing. AI and quantum computing are developing in parallel and beginning to reinforce each other.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading quantum communication in Vigo

As of October 2026, he leads the Quantum Communication Technology Group at VQCC. The group studies quantum key distribution and quantum randomness generation.
