Guoshuai Zhao

Also known as 赵国帅

Guoshuai Zhao is a computer scientist at Xi'an Jiaotong University whose research covers recommender systems, information retrieval and large language models. After earning an engineering doctorate there in 2019, they joined its School of Software in April 2019, were named one of the university's Top Ten Academic Newcomers in 2020, and became an associate professor in June 2021. In 2022, they were one of 16 authors of “A Neural Corpus Indexer for Document Retrieval,” a sequence-to-sequence retrieval model that received an Outstanding Paper award at NeurIPS 2022. Later work includes a 2024 chief-scientist role in a Shaanxi team-building program, oral papers at AAAI 2025 and ACM Multimedia 2025, and a 2026 ACL Findings paper on copyright protection in code generated by language models. They are an associate professor, doctoral supervisor and assistant to the dean in the School of Software.

    Social recommendation papers

    In 2014, they coauthor “Personalized Recommendation Combining User Interest and Social Circle” with Xueming Qian, He Feng and Tao Mei for IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. In 2016, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia carries their paper “User-Service Rating Prediction by Exploring Social Users’ Rating Behaviors,” written with Qian and Xing Xie.

    Joining the School of Software

    They earn an engineering doctorate at Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2019 and join its School of Software in April 2019. ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology carries their 2019 paper “Personalized Reason Generation for Explainable Song Recommendation,” written with Ruihua Song, Tetsuya Sakai, Xing Xie, Xueming Qian and others. In 2019, they are also selected for the national Postdoctoral Innovative Talent Support Program.

    Top ten academic newcomers

    In 2020, Xi'an Jiaotong University names them one of its Top Ten Academic Newcomers, and they are also named one of Xi'an's Top Ten Programmers.

  4. 2021

    Associate professor at Xi'an Jiaotong

    They become an associate professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University in June 2021. Their 2021 paper “CAPER: Context-Aware Personalized Emoji Recommendation” appears in IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, written with Zhidan Liu, Yulu Chao and Xueming Qian.

  5. 2022

    A NeurIPS outstanding paper

    In 2022, they are one of 16 authors of “A Neural Corpus Indexer for Document Retrieval,” which receives an Outstanding Paper award at NeurIPS 2022. The paper proposes Neural Corpus Indexer (NCI), a sequence-to-sequence network that generates relevant document identifiers directly for a query. Their 2022 paper “Personalized Long- and Short-term Preference Learning for Next POI Recommendation,” written with Yuxia Wu, Ke Li and Xueming Qian, appears in IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering.

  6. 2024

    Chief scientist in Shaanxi

    In 2024, the Shaanxi science and technology department names them a chief scientist for its Qinchuangyuan “scientists plus engineers” team-building effort. They also publish “Learning to Paraphrase for Alignment with LLM Preference” at EMNLP 2024 Findings with Junbo Fu, Yimin Deng, Yunqi Mi and Xueming Qian.

    Orals at AAAI and ACM Multimedia

    In 2025, they coauthor two oral papers: “M3Net,” an audio classification network for edge devices, at AAAI 2025, and “Ear with Eye,” a lightweight multimodal audio-visual network, at ACM Multimedia 2025. They chair a special forum at ACM MMAsia 2025 titled “Cultural Heritage Recommendation System with Multimodal Learning.” The Shaanxi Computer Society gives them a second prize in natural science in 2025.

    Associate professor and dean's assistant

    As of October 2026, they are an associate professor, doctoral supervisor and assistant to the dean in the School of Software at Xi'an Jiaotong University, working on information retrieval and personalized recommendation, LLM safety and applications, and multimodal understanding and analysis. Their 2026 ACL Findings paper “Duplicate-Aware Controlled Code Generation” proposes a decoding method that reduces verbatim repetition of copyrighted code in LLM output, and KDD 2026 accepts their paper “CanonFedRec: A Canonical Geometric Framework for Personalized Federated Recommendation.” They serve on the editorial board of Information Processing & Management.
