Researcher

Georgios Piliouras

Georgios Piliouras is a computer scientist whose work connects algorithmic game theory with multi-agent learning and AI safety. He earned a computer science PhD at Cornell in 2010, held a Simons Institute fellowship at UC Berkeley, and worked at Georgia Tech, Caltech, SUTD and Google DeepMind. With Stefanos Leonardos, he connected exploration and exploitation in multi-agent learning to catastrophe theory, and his 2024 Nash-equilibrium paper received an ICLR honorable mention. As of October 2026, he is a senior staff research scientist at Google DeepMind and coauthors machine-learning work on game-theoretic incentive design.

Timeline

  1. 2010

    A Cornell computer science PhD

He earns a PhD in computer science at Cornell University in August 2010, under Éva Tardos.

  2. 2015

    A Simons Institute fellowship

In fall 2015, he is a Research Fellow in Economics and Computation at UC Berkeley's Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing.

  3. 2018

    A Singapore NRF fellowship

He receives the Singapore NRF Fellowship in 2018; his research spans multi-agent learning and algorithmic game theory.

  4. 2021

    Multi-agent learning wins AAAI

With Stefanos Leonardos, he uses dynamical-systems analysis to connect exploration and exploitation in multi-agent learning with catastrophe theory. Their paper wins the Best Paper Award at AAAI 2021.

  5. 2023

    Associate professor at SUTD

In 2023, he is an associate professor at SUTD and a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind. His prior research posts include the ECE department at Georgia Tech and Caltech's Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, plus a visiting professorship at UC Berkeley.

  6. 2024

    A stochastic Nash solver

With Ian Gemp and Luke Marris, he proposes a loss function for approximate Nash equilibria in normal-form games that allows unbiased Monte Carlo estimation and stochastic optimization. The paper receives an ICLR 2024 honorable mention.

  7. 2025

    Game theory for AI safety

In April 2025, he presents “Game Theoretic Approaches to AI Safety” at the Simons Institute. He coauthors the 2025 report “Multi-Agent Risks from Advanced AI,” which groups risks into miscoordination, conflict, and collusion.

  8. As of October 2026

    Senior staff research scientist

He is a senior staff research scientist at Google DeepMind. In 2026, he coauthors “Deep Incentive Design with Differentiable Equilibrium Blocks,” a framework that trains neural networks to design incentives across contract design, machine scheduling, and inverse-equilibrium problems.
