Fatih Porikli
Also known as Fatih M. Porikli, Fatih Murat Porikli
Fatih Porikli is a computer vision researcher whose work spans visual search, deep networks and generative image systems. He earned a 1992 BS in EE at Bilkent, developed satellite imaging solutions at HRL and 3D display systems at AT&T Research Labs before joining MERL in 2000, and completed a PhD at NYU in 2002. His integral-histogram patent described a method for image-region search; he coauthored deep CNN work on pedestrian detection and became an IEEE Fellow in 2014. He served as a professor at ANU and held leadership roles at NICTA and Futurewei; he coauthored the MultiHuman-Testbench benchmark in 2025 and is Vice President of Technology at Qualcomm AI Research as of October 2026.
Timeline
-
By 2000
Bilkent and early imaging
In 1992, he earns a BS in EE at Bilkent University. Before joining MERL in 2000, he develops satellite imaging solutions at HRL and 3D display systems at AT&T Research Labs.
-
2002
A PhD from NYU
He earns a PhD from New York University in 2002.
-
2005–2006
An integral histogram patent
In a patent application filed in 2005, he describes a computer-implemented method that extracts integral histograms from images and speeds search across target regions. He receives the R&D 100 Scientist of the Year Award in 2006.
-
2014
An IEEE Fellowship
He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2014 for contributions to computer vision and video surveillance.
-
2016
Deep CNNs for pedestrian detection
He coauthors “Pushing the Limits of Deep CNNs for Pedestrian Detection,” which reuses a deep network’s convolutional feature maps to train boosted decision models. The paper reports a 24% relative improvement in the Caltech pedestrian dataset’s log-average miss rate.
-
By 2019
ANU, NICTA and Futurewei
He is a tenured Professor in ANU’s Research School of Engineering and serves as Vice President of Futurewei’s San Diego Device Hardware Competency Center. He leads NICTA’s Computer Vision Research Group until 2017, serves as Chief Scientist for Futurewei’s Autonomous Vehicles, and works as a Distinguished Research Scientist at MERL.
-
2025
A multi-human image benchmark
He coauthors MultiHuman-Testbench, a NeurIPS 2025 benchmark for evaluating images with multiple people. Its metrics measure face count, identity similarity, prompt alignment and action detection across generated images.
-
As of October 2026
Vice President at Qualcomm
He is Vice President of Technology at Qualcomm AI Research. In January 2026, UC San Diego lists him as Vice President of Technology at Qualcomm on its Wireless Summit agenda.
