Erik Meijer
Also known as ERIK MEIJER
Erik Meijer works across programming languages, machine-learning optimization and AI agent verification. He earned a PhD at Nijmegen in 1992 and taught software technology at Utrecht during the 1990s. He joined Microsoft Research in Seattle in 1999, led its Cloud Programmability Team, developed LINQ and became a part-time professor at TU Delft in 2011 before starting Applied Duality in 2013. The optimizer paper he coauthored won a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award in 2022; he presented a language model as a programming-language virtual machine at Delft in February 2024 and joined Normal Computing as vice president of engineering in 2025. At AI Engineer World’s Fair in 2026, he presented work connecting Universalis with Automind and checking AI agent plans before execution; as of October 2026, he is a senior fellow at Normal Computing.
Timeline
-
1990s
A PhD and Utrecht teaching
He earns a PhD at Nijmegen University in 1992 and teaches software technology at Utrecht University during the 1990s.
-
1999–2011
Microsoft Research and LINQ
In 1999, he leaves Utrecht for Microsoft Research in Seattle. By 2011, he leads the Cloud Programmability Team and develops LINQ for querying shared data; his Microsoft work includes C#, Visual Basic, Volta and Reactive Extensions for .NET.
-
2011
Part-time professor at Delft
In 2011, he becomes a part-time professor of Cloud Programming within TU Delft’s Software Engineering Research Group. He continues to lead Microsoft’s Cloud Programmability Team.
-
2013
Starting Applied Duality
In early 2013, he leaves Microsoft and starts Applied Duality Incorporated.
-
2022
A NeurIPS optimizer award
In 2022, he coauthors “Gradient Descent: The Ultimate Optimizer” with Kartik Chandra, Audrey Xie and Jonathan Ragan-Kelley. The method uses a modification to backpropagation to compute hypergradients, letting stochastic gradient descent tune its own hyperparameters; NeurIPS gives the paper an Outstanding Paper Award.
-
February 2024
Language models as virtual machines
In February 2024, he is Meta’s senior director of engineering and presents “Virtual Machinations” at TU Delft. The talk describes a natural-language programming language implemented with a large language model as its virtual machine for generating instructions.
-
2025
Joining Normal Computing
In 2025, he joins Normal Computing as vice president of engineering and works on formal modeling, compiler design and system coordination for Normal EDA and Normal ASICs.
-
As of October 2026
Formal checks for AI agents
As of October 2026, he is a senior fellow at Normal Computing. At AI Engineer World’s Fair in 2026, he participates as a research scholar affiliated with Leibniz Labs and connects Universalis with Automind, an agent harness built around checked execution plans. He proposes using Horn clause logic and SMT solvers to check agent-generated plans against formalized business rules before execution.
