Erik Mueller

Also known as Erik T. Mueller

Erik Mueller is a computer scientist whose AI work spans models of human thought, commonsense reasoning, question answering and clinical AI. His 1990 book presented a computer model of human daydreaming for creative problem solving and learning, and he earned an S.B. in computer science and engineering from MIT plus M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from UCLA. He was a member of IBM’s Watson team, whose question-answering system won on Jeopardy! The team received the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize, and Mueller coauthored work on clinical decision support and WatsonPaths. As of October 2026, he is VP of Knowledge Technologies at Tempus AI.

Timeline

  1. 1990

    A computer model of daydreaming

In 1990, computer scientist Erik Mueller publishes Daydreaming in Humans and Machines, a computer model of human daydreaming for creative problem solving and learning. He holds an S.B. in computer science and engineering from MIT and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from UCLA.

  2. 2006

    Commonsense Reasoning

In 2006, he publishes Commonsense Reasoning, which uses event calculus to formalize commonsense reasoning.

  3. 2013

    Watson earns the Feigenbaum Prize

Mueller is a member of the IBM team behind Watson, whose question-answering system wins on Jeopardy! In 2013, the team receives the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize for combining symbolic knowledge representation, natural-language understanding and statistical machine learning for real-time factual question answering. He coauthors a 2013 paper on adapting Watson’s DeepQA technology for evidence-based clinical decision support.

  4. 2017

    WatsonPaths for medical questions

In 2017, he coauthors a description of WatsonPaths, a system for scenario-based questions such as patient cases that ask for a diagnosis or treatment. The system breaks scenarios into subquestions and uses probabilistic inference over a graphic model; it improves accuracy on medical test-preparation questions over multiple baselines.

  5. As of October 2026

    VP of Knowledge Technologies

As of October 2026, he is VP of Knowledge Technologies at Tempus AI, where his work includes developing and deploying deep-learning models.
