Researcher

Dima Damen

Dima Damen is a computer-vision researcher whose work studies actions and object interactions in first-person video. She earned degrees in computer science and multimedia systems at Birzeit and Leeds, taught at Petra University, completed a PhD under David Hogg, and joined Bristol in 2010. She coauthored work on EPIC-KITCHENS, an egocentric video benchmark, and the CVPR paper presenting HD-EPIC, a highly detailed validation dataset. As of October 2026, she is Professor of Computer Vision at Bristol and Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind.

Timeline

  1. 2002–2003

    Degrees at Birzeit and Leeds

She earns a BSc in Computer Science at Birzeit University in 2002 and an MSc with High Distinction in Distributed Multimedia Systems at the University of Leeds in 2003.

  2. 2003–2009

    Teaching and a Leeds doctorate

She lectures at Petra University from 2003 to 2006 and completes a PhD in computer vision at Leeds under David Hogg in 2009.

  3. 2010–2021

    Academic posts at Bristol

She joins Bristol as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 2010 to 2012, then serves as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer from 2013 to 2018 and Reader from 2018 to 2021. In August 2021, she becomes Professor of Computer Vision.

  4. 2016–2020

    You-Do, I-Learn and EPIC-KITCHENS

Nokia Technologies awards her a €50,000 charitable donation in 2016 for egocentric-vision research on object interactions. Her You-Do, I-Learn project uses a glass-mounted camera to identify objects a wearer uses and how people interact with them. Her 2020 paper describes EPIC-KITCHENS, introduced in 2018 as a large-scale egocentric video benchmark that offers a view of object interactions, attention, and intention.

  5. 2021–2025

    Conference and journal leadership

She chairs ICCV in 2021 and serves as Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE TPAMI from 2023 to 2025.

  6. 2024

    An ELLIS fellowship

In November 2024, she is selected as an ELLIS Fellow.

  7. 2025

    The HD-EPIC dataset

In March 2025, EPIC-KITCHENS releases HD-EPIC, a large-scale, highly detailed validation dataset. Damen coauthors the CVPR 2025 paper that presents it.

  8. As of October 2026

    Bristol professor and DeepMind scientist

As of October 2026, she is a Professor of Computer Vision at the University of Bristol and Senior Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. She is part of DeepMind's Vision team and works on video understanding research; her 2026 work includes a CVPR paper on learning from single-life videos.
