Researcher

Dave Cliff

Dave Cliff is a computer scientist whose AI work spans evolutionary robotics, artificial-life agents and financial-market algorithms. He studies computer science at Leeds and cognitive science at Sussex, then publishes research on evolving robot controllers in 1993. In 1996, he co-authors a paper on artificial-life agents and invents ZIP, a trading algorithm that beats real traders. His career takes him through HP Labs, Deutsche Bank's FX group, academic research at Southampton, and a Bristol professorship, where a 2018 paper describes the Bristol Stock Exchange as a simulator used for teaching and research since 2012. In March 2026, he is a Non-Executive Director at RentGuarantor and leads a Bristol team working on AI and machine learning; as of October 2026, he is an Emeritus Professor in Bristol's School of Computer Science.

Timeline

  1. 1990s

    Education and robot vision

He earns a computer science BSc at Leeds and MSc and PhD degrees in cognitive science at Sussex. In 1993, he co-authors a Sussex paper with Inman Harvey and Phil Husbands on visual robot controller networks created through artificial evolution.

  2. 1996

    Artificial life and ZIP

He co-authors a Sussex paper on artificial-life software agents for home entertainment. While consulting for Hewlett Packard Labs in 1996, he invents ZIP, a trading algorithm that beats real traders.

  3. 1998–2005

    HP's adaptive systems group

In 1998, he leaves an academic post at MIT for a senior research scientist role at HP Labs' European Research Centre in Bristol, where he leads its Complex Adaptive Systems group.

  4. 2005

    Trading at Deutsche Bank

In early 2005, he moves to Deutsche Bank's Foreign Exchange trading floor in London and directs its FX Complex Risk Group.

  5. 2005

    Research leadership at Southampton

He returns to Southampton academia to direct a £14 million research programme; in October 2005, he becomes director of the LSCITS national research consortium.

  6. 2007–2018

    The Bristol Stock Exchange

He moves to Bristol as professor of computer science in July 2007. His 2018 paper describes the Bristol Stock Exchange as a minimal limit-order-book simulator used for teaching and research since 2012.

  7. March 2026

    A RentGuarantor directorship

In March 2026, he is a Non-Executive Director at RentGuarantor and leads a Bristol team working on AI and machine learning.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Bristol

He is an Emeritus Professor in Bristol's School of Computer Science.
