Christoph Schuhmann
Christoph Schuhmann is a computer scientist and LAION founder whose open datasets support AI research. He studied computer science, physics and psychology at the University of Vienna, produced a documentary about alternative education and began LAION-400M while teaching high-school physics and computer science after reading the DALL-E-1 paper. He published LAION-400M in 2021, coauthored LAION-5B, which NeurIPS named among its Outstanding Datasets and Benchmarks Papers, and led LAION-COCO's 600 million generated captions. LAION became a 2023 Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year recipient; he supported German-language LeoLM, coauthored OSSAS research summaries and LAION-BVD, and helped adopt LAION's 2026 Gender Equality Plan. As of October 2026, he is LAION's organizational lead and holds a master's in physics and computer science.
Timeline
-
2021
Teaching and LAION-400M
At the University of Vienna, he studies computer science, physics, and psychology and produces Schools of Trust, a documentary about alternative education. While teaching high-school physics and computer science, he begins assembling image-text pairs on Colab after reading the DALL-E-1 paper; in 2021, he publishes LAION-400M, an open dataset of 400 million English image-text pairs.
-
2022
LAION-5B at NeurIPS
In 2022, he coauthors LAION-5B, an open dataset of 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs, including 2.32 billion English pairs. NeurIPS names the paper among its Outstanding Datasets and Benchmarks Papers.
-
September 2022
LAION-COCO captions
In September 2022, he leads LAION-COCO, implements a first code version, runs most caption generations, and conducts the human evaluations. The team releases 600 million generated captions for images from LAION-5B's English subset.
-
September 2023
Supporting LeoLM
In September 2023, he supports, guides, and supervises LeoLM. The project releases German-language foundation models built on Llama 2 and a German evaluation set.
-
2023
A Falling Walls award
In 2023, the Falling Walls Foundation names LAION a Science Breakthrough of the Year recipient in Science and Innovation Management for "Breaking the Wall to Democratised AI." It lists Schuhmann among LAION's founding members.
-
November 2025
Open scientific paper summaries
In November 2025, he coauthors OSSAS, a project for structured summaries of academic literature. The team retrieves and processes about 100 million research papers from the public internet.
-
August 2026
The LAION-BVD video dataset
In August 2026, he coauthors LAION-BVD, an open video dataset for multimodal machine-learning research. It contains 10 million hours of video from 80 million downloaded videos.
-
As of October 2026
LAION's organizational lead
In March 2026, he co-adopts LAION's Gender Equality Plan with Jenia Jitsev and Robert Kaczmarczyk. As of October 2026, he is LAION's organizational lead and a founder and holds a master's in physics and computer science.
