Researcher

Robert Kaczmarczyk

Robert Kaczmarczyk is a medical researcher and co-founder of LAION, the German non-profit behind the open image-text datasets LAION-400M and LAION-5B. Trained in medicine, he researches dermatology at the Technical University of Munich. He co-authored the LAION-400M paper in 2021, and the LAION-5B paper won a NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper award. LAION received the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year award in 2023, and his medical AI papers include a 2024 evaluation of multimodal models on diagnostic questions in npj Digital Medicine and the HistoGPT dermatopathology model in Nature Communications in 2025. In March 2026, he joined Christoph Schuhmann and Jenia Jitsev in adopting LAION's Gender Equality Plan, and he is LAION's Community, Medical and Operational Lead and a founder.

Timeline

  1. 2021

    Co-founding LAION

He is among the founders of LAION e.V., a German non-profit for open AI models and datasets, set up in 2021 after the group had worked as private individuals until mid-2021. In November 2021, he is one of the authors of LAION-400M, a public dataset of 400 million CLIP-filtered image-text pairs.

  2. 2022

    LAION-5B and a NeurIPS award

In 2022, he is one of the authors of LAION-5B, an open dataset of 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs. The paper wins an Outstanding Paper award at NeurIPS 2022.

  3. 2023

    A Falling Walls breakthrough

In 2023, he is named among the LAION team that wins the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year award in the Science & Innovation Management category. The team is recognized for widening access to advanced AI models, tools and datasets.

  4. 2024

    Dermatology research at TUM

In 2024, he researches dermatology at the Technical University of Munich after studying medicine, and he trains there as a dermatology specialist.

  5. August 2024

    Multimodal AI in diagnostics

In August 2024, he coauthors "Evaluating multimodal AI in medical diagnostics" in npj Digital Medicine, listing the Department of Dermatology and Allergy at TUM. The study tests multimodal models on NEJM Image Challenge questions: the Claude 3 family is the most accurate among the AI models, and collective human decision-making outperforms all of them.

  6. May 2025

    HistoGPT for dermatopathology

In May 2025, he is among the authors of HistoGPT in Nature Communications, a vision language model that generates pathology reports from histology images. The model is trained on 15,129 whole slide images from 6705 dermatology patients, and his affiliation on the paper is the Department of Dermatology and Allergy at TUM.

  7. As of October 2026

    LAION lead and founder

In March 2026, he adopts LAION's Gender Equality Plan with Christoph Schuhmann and Jenia Jitsev. As of October 2026, he is Community, Medical and Operational Lead and a founder at LAION, with a Technical University of Munich affiliation.
