Jenia Jitsev

Jenia Jitsev is a machine learning researcher with a background in neuroscience who co-founded the non-profit LAION e.V., home of the open dataset LAION-5B and the OpenCLIP models. He studied computer science and psychology at Bonn, earned a computer science PhD in Frankfurt under Christoph von der Malsburg, and then modelled learning in cortico-basal ganglia loops as a postdoctoral researcher in Cologne and Jülich. LAION-5B, a dataset of 5.85 billion image-text pairs that he coauthored, won an Outstanding Datasets and Benchmarks Papers award at NeurIPS 2022, and LAION took the 2023 Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year award. His later work on OpenCLIP scaling laws, DataComp and the open-sci-ref reference models builds open baselines for studying foundation models. He is Head of ATML Scalable Machine Learning & Multi-Purpose AI at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Scientific Lead of LAION, and one of the co-directors of the ELLIS Unit NRW founded in 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2012

    Best paper at IJCNN 2012

In 2012, he receives the Best Paper Award at IJCNN.

  2. By 2018

PhD in Frankfurt, team in Jülich

He studies computer science and psychology at the University of Bonn, then earns a computer science PhD at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Frankfurt under Christoph von der Malsburg. He continues as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Neurological Research in Cologne and at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Jülich, modelling unsupervised and reinforcement learning in cortico-basal ganglia loops. By 2018, he heads the Cross-Sectional Team "Deep Learning" at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre.

  3. 2022

    LAION-5B wins at NeurIPS

In 2022, the LAION-5B paper, with him among its authors, wins an Outstanding Datasets and Benchmarks Papers award at NeurIPS. LAION-5B offers 5.85 billion CLIP-filtered image-text pairs for research on large-scale multi-modal models. The Jülich Supercomputing Centre and LAION e.V., the Hamburg-based non-profit he co-founded, carry out the work.

  4. 2022–2023

    OpenCLIP scaling laws and DataComp

In 2022, he coauthors a study of scaling laws for contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP) that uses the public LAION dataset and the open-source OpenCLIP repository to train models on up to two billion image-text pairs. In 2023, he is among the authors of DataComp, a benchmark built around a candidate pool of 12.8 billion image-text pairs from Common Crawl, which belongs to the NeurIPS 2023 Datasets and Benchmarks Track.

  5. 2023

    Falling Walls breakthrough award

In 2023, LAION wins the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year award in the Science & Innovation Management category. The award names him with Christoph Schuhmann, Richard Vencu, Romain Beaumont and Robert Kaczmarczyk, a team recognized for widening access to advanced AI models, tools and datasets.

  6. 2025

    Scaling laws and open-sci-ref

A 2025 scaling-law study that he coauthors derives full scaling laws for the CLIP and MaMMUT language-vision learning procedures and uses them to compare models and datasets. In August 2025, OpenEuroLLM and Open-sci release the open-sci-ref reference models with all intermediate checkpoints, and he coordinates and supervises the project, acquires the compute and designs the experiments.

  7. As of October 2026

    Co-directing ELLIS Unit NRW

In May 2026, Forschungszentrum Jülich joins the newly founded ELLIS Unit NRW, which develops open-source foundation models and datasets; the University of Bonn coordinates the unit under Jürgen Gall, and he is one of its co-directors. He is Head of ATML Scalable Machine Learning & Multi-Purpose AI at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, leads its Scalable Learning and Multi-Purpose AI (SLAMPAI) lab, and serves as Scientific Lead of LAION.
