Researcher

Christof Teuscher

Christof Teuscher is a computer scientist whose research connects artificial intelligence with biologically inspired and unconventional computing. After training as a Swiss electronics apprentice, he earned computer science degrees at EPFL and published a 2002 book on Alan Turing’s neural network architectures. A 2002 paper with three colleagues describes the BioWall; he received the 2004 Cor Baayen Award and held research posts at UC San Diego and Los Alamos, joining LANL’s technical staff in 2007. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Portland State University and leads a lab working on AI accelerators and brain-inspired computers; the lab’s 2026 course covers hardware for AI and machine learning.

Timeline

  1. 2000–2004

    Degrees in computer science

After training as a Swiss electronics apprentice, he earns an M.Sc. in 2000 and a Ph.D. in 2004 in computer science at EPFL.

  2. 2002

    A book on Turing's networks

In 2002, he publishes Turing's Connectionism: An Investigation of Neural Network Architectures, which analyzes Turing's unorganized machines and uses genetic algorithms to build and train them.

  3. 2002

    The BioWall computing tissue

A 2002 paper by Teuscher and three colleagues describes the BioWall as a giant reconfigurable computing tissue developed to implement machines in the Embryonics project.

  4. 2004

    The Cor Baayen Award

ERCIM presents him with the 2004 Cor Baayen Award for research on unconventional biologically inspired machines.

  5. 2004–2007

    UCSD and Los Alamos

In 2004, he becomes a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD; in 2005, he joins Los Alamos National Laboratory as a distinguished Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow, and in 2007, he becomes a Technical Staff Member there.

  6. As of October 2026

    Professor at Portland State

He is a professor at Portland State University and heads his research lab, whose work includes AI accelerators and brain-inspired computers. In February 2026, he announces the lab's ECE 410/510 course on AI and machine learning hardware, covering CNNs, DNNs, transformer-based LLMs, and neuromorphic processors.
