Christof Koch

Christof Koch is a researcher whose career spans AI, visual processing, and consciousness science. He studied physics and philosophy at Tübingen, earned a PhD in 1982, worked for four years in MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and joined Caltech's faculty in 1986. With Francis Crick, he published a 1990 paper on consciousness; a visual-processing model he coauthored in 1998 reproduces human contrast and orientation thresholds, while his saliency-map hypothesis links biological and computer vision. He became Chief Scientific Officer of the Allen Institute in 2011 and its president in 2015, then published The Feeling of Life Itself on Integrated Information Theory in 2019. He stepped down from executive responsibilities in 2023 and, as of October 2026, is a Meritorious Investigator at the Allen Institute.

Timeline

  1. 1974–1982

    Physics and a PhD

He earns a French baccalaureate in physics and mathematics at the Lycée Descartes in Rabat in 1974. At Tübingen, he studies physics and philosophy and earns a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in 1982.

  2. 1982–2013

    MIT and Caltech

After earning his PhD, he spends four years as a postdoctoral fellow in MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. He joins Caltech's faculty in 1986 and works there through 2013.

  3. 1990

    A theory of consciousness

With Francis Crick, he publishes Towards a neurobiological theory of consciousness in 1990. The paper proposes visual awareness as a route to studying consciousness through neurobiology.

  4. 1998

    A model of early vision

He coauthors A Model of Early Visual Processing with Laurent Itti, Jochen Braun and Dale K. Lee in 1998; the model reproduces human contrast and orientation thresholds. His saliency-map hypothesis summarizes bottom-up visual information for biological and computer vision.

  5. 2010

    An Allen Distinguished Investigator

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation names him to its inaugural group of Allen Distinguished Investigators in 2010.

  6. 2011–2015

    Leading the Allen Institute

He joins the Allen Institute for Brain Science as Chief Scientific Officer in 2011 and becomes president in 2015.

  7. 2019

    The Feeling of Life Itself

He publishes The Feeling of Life Itself through MIT Press in 2019; the book describes Integrated Information Theory as an empirically testable theory that starts with experience and proceeds to neuronal mechanisms.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research at the Allen Institute

In 2023, he steps down from executive responsibilities at the Allen Institute and returns to scientific work. In March 2026, he speaks to a global audience about psychedelics, unresponsive patients, and conscious experience; as of October 2026, he is a Meritorious Investigator at the Allen Institute.
