Carl Shulman
Carl Shulman is an AI researcher whose work examines AI risk, decision theory and the economics of advanced AI. In 2010, he and Anders Sandberg published an argument about a software-limited singularity; he was a MIRI research fellow in 2011, left MIRI in August 2013 to study computer science, and contributed to the FHI report Racing to the Precipice. By 2021, he was a research associate at Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, publishing on AI risk and decision theory and consulting for Open Philanthropy. In 2023 and 2024, he outlined AI takeover scenarios and discussed how cheap superhuman AGI could change work, growth, national security and daily life; he studied philosophy at the University of Toronto and Harvard, then law at NYU. As of October 2026, he co-manages Situational Awareness LP, a hedge fund founded in 2024 with an AGI-focused thesis and a strategy spanning public equities, semiconductor companies and energy infrastructure.
