Carl Hewitt
Also known as Carl Eddie Hewitt
Carl Hewitt was a computer scientist whose doctoral work at MIT produced Planner, a language for proving theorems and manipulating models in a robot. In 1973 he, Peter Bishop, and Richard Steiger introduced the actor model of concurrent computation, which influenced the development of the Scheme programming language. He gave a keynote on the Actor Model and ActorScript, recorded in August 2015, and lectures on Scalable Intelligent Systems at the University of St Andrews in October 2018. He died in 2022 in Aptos, California.
Timeline
-
1971
A Planner dissertation at MIT
He completes a mathematics PhD at MIT in 1971, with a dissertation on Planner, a language for proving theorems and manipulating models in a robot.
-
1973
The actor model
He, Peter Bishop, and Richard Steiger introduce the actor model of concurrent computation in a 1973 paper. The model later influences the development of the Scheme programming language.

Keio University visiting chair
He serves as IBM Chair Visiting Professor in the computer science department at Keio University from September 1989 to August 1990.
-
August 2015
Keynote on the Actor Model
He keynotes on the Actor Model and ActorScript, with examples for large-scale datacenters and IoT, in a talk recorded in August 2015.
-
October 2018
Lectures on scalable intelligent systems
He gives lectures on Scalable Intelligent Systems at the University of St Andrews in October 2018. The lectures outline a technology stack that can bring such systems to fruition by 2025.
