Researcher

Ben Lipkin

Ben Lipkin is a researcher whose work connects language models with formal reasoning, code generation, and AI for mathematics. Before his PhD, he studied computational neuroscience at the University of Michigan and coauthored LINC, an EMNLP Outstanding Paper that uses a theorem prover. He contributed to StarCoder and the BigCode evaluation harness, and to NuminaMath, whose 7B TIR system won the first AIMO Progress Prize in 2024. His paper on adaptive weighted rejection sampling won COLM's 2025 Outstanding Paper Award, and his MIT BCS thesis defense on modular cognitive architecture was scheduled for December 2025; he completed a PhD at MIT. As of October 2026, he is a research scientist and research engineering group lead at a stealth startup.

Timeline

  1. 2023

    LINC wins an EMNLP award

Before his PhD, he studies computational neuroscience at the University of Michigan. In 2023, he coauthors LINC, which translates natural-language premises and conclusions into first-order logic for an external theorem prover; EMNLP gives the paper an Outstanding Paper Award.

  2. 2023

    Evaluating code models

He contributes to code-model development and evaluation through the StarCoder project. In 2023, the BigCode evaluation harness supports secure, containerized evaluation of code-generation language models.

  3. 2024

    NuminaMath wins the AIMO prize

The NuminaMath dataset lists him as a coauthor. In 2024, NuminaMath 7B TIR wins the first AIMO Progress Prize after solving 29 of 50 problems on the private test set.

  4. 2025

    A COLM Outstanding Paper Award

In 2025, his paper on adaptive weighted rejection sampling wins COLM's Outstanding Paper Award.

  5. By 2026

    A PhD and thesis defense

He completes his PhD at MIT. MIT BCS schedules his thesis defense on modular cognitive architecture for December 2025.

  6. As of October 2026

    Research at a stealth startup

He is a research scientist and research engineering group lead at a stealth startup building machine learning systems across language modeling, databases, and probabilistic computing.
