Benjamin J. Kuipers
Benjamin J. Kuipers studies how an intelligent system can represent space and physical change. His work connects human cognitive maps with robot exploration and qualitative reasoning. Kuipers earned his MIT doctorate in 1977. His thesis presented the TOUR model of the human cognitive map, with several representations of large-scale space. Kuipers and Yung-Tai Byun studied robot exploration and mapping, including in a 1988 paper. Their model connects discrete places with continuous robot control.
